Tucked away at the south end of Mapperley Top, framed by lush garden borders and the open stretch of Haywood Road Green, sits the Haywood Road Community Centre. While the centre is a bustling hub for meetups and activities throughout the week, the green space truly comes alive once a year for a local phenomenon: the annual Silent Disco.
Nottingham was awarded UNESCO status as a City of Literature in December 2015. As part of their celebrations to mark this decade milestone, Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature, the University of Nottingham and Visit Nottingham worked together on an AHRC funded research bid to bring the map to Nottingham.
As part of the project, Research Affiliate Crystal Mah-Wing was employed to help create a map, showcasing our cities best literary locations, for locals and tourists alike. We spoke to Crystal about the process, the team she worked with and what to expect when it’s out at the end of March…

As with all good ghost stories, it happened on a dark and stormy night in Mapperley. Actually, the weather on the night of Friday 6 June 2018 was fairly standard for that time of year; balmy, with a light breeze rustling through the detritus of shopping receipts and discarded plastic carrier bags from the nearby Aldi. However, in this otherwise unassuming neighbourhood in central Nottingham, something truly strange was afoot; something that would go on to blur the lines between fact and fiction, education and entertainment, and perhaps even the living and the dead.
