10 Things To Do in Nottingham This Week

Still got your old video player lying about? Hang on in there, cos videos are back, baby. Joe Pickett aka, The Onion, and The Late Show with David Letterman’s Nick Prueher are summoning Nottingham’s VHS enthusiasts to enjoy their unearthed charity shop finds. They’ve scoured thrift shops across America, collecting video after video to put together a somewhat questionable piece of film. Highlights include a collection of satanic panic videos from the eighties, outtakes and on-air bloopers from over ten years of North Dakota local news; a celeb heavy Desert Storm parade sponsored by Taco Bell. Definitely not one to be missed if you like exploring the inner depths of the questionable side of your mind. Count us in, duck.

The rise of Trump has been unsettling, to say the least, and us opinionated Notts folk wanna talk about it. Nottingham’s People Assembly are hosting a discussion, and putting forward a protest to ban Trump’s State visit to the UK. Discussing issues such as LGBTQ marriage rights in America, abortion and his Muslim Travel bans, author Neil will give an introduction to the rise of the new right based on his book, Creeping Fascism: Brexit, Trump and the rise of the far right. Then everyone will be split down into groups to discuss the issues and come together at the end. Bring along all that bottled up rage for a free flowing discussion, and prepare to come up with some future actions.

In July last year, Nottingham became the first city in the UK to expand definitions of hate crime to include misogyny. Over six months later, join the Rights and Justice RPA, the Centre for Research in Race and Rights and Journey to Justice Nottingham for a conversation around the nature and success of the new ruling, and how it can continue to make a difference within Nottinghamshire and beyond. It’s a wicked opportunity to discuss feminist issues, meet other like-minded individuals, and gerrit all off your chest. Speakers will include Nottingham Women’s Centre’s Melanie Jeffs, Susannah Fish from Nottinghamshire Police and Dr Loretta Trickett, Senior Lecturer in Criminal Justice and Criminology at Nottingham Trent University. You’ll need to register online for tickets.

Oo-er, what a melodic trio of loveliness. Jack Cheshire will be touring for their new album, Black Light Theatre, kicking off with some psychedelic tunes to get your grooviest groove on to. Grab am ice-cold bevvy, and settle down to some top dollar harmonisation from the supporting ukulele guitar duo, Putin and the Dolphin. A double act worth their weight in gold, and, despite the off-the-wall name, they probably won’t bring a Russian dictator or a water mammal along for the ride. No promises, though. Stacey McMullen will also be making an appearance, in preparation for the release of his EP in June. Music to our ears for sure.

The Anti Gallery, aka TAG, is a pop up gallery with its roots firmly bedded in Nottingham. Inspired by urban culture and activism, TAG represents artists from all cultures and creative worlds. The Anti Gallery is all about taking art out of traditional gallery environments. By working in unusual spaces, it is about making art more accessible to more people. There’s also a strong link with graffiti and street art which literally lives outside of galleries. You’re invited to pop along to ‘Tempreh and have a go at making art that lives out of the box this week. It’s high time you dug out those old sketchbooks, and this is the kick up the derriere you need. Might wanna practice your graffiti tag on your garage wall first, mind.

Worra lineup. Rough Trade is set to be taken over by some local lads who know a thing or two about the ones and twos. Yes, electronic music production is summat our city thrives on, and this lot are at the forefront of what’s making it move. Duo Congi are as eclectic as they are talented, with influences of hip hop, dubstep and everything in between, creating a live show with mentorship from Brownswood and Gilles Peterson’s Future Bubblers programme. The room is being stripped right back to create an immersive setting, using a lighting rig and sound system to gi’ it some extra welly. On top of those boggers, we’ve got techno and animated madness from Lukas Wigflex, hot on the heels of Max Cooper’s appearance at Brickworks, and of course atmospheric-techno don Felix. The vinyl game is strong with this one.

Spring has sprung, you say? Tell that to the weather man. Most of us have been cooped up inside, nestled into a safe arm chair by the fire, nose deep in a book. The weather hasn’t half made it easy to hibernate. But, it’s high time we got out the house, and had a conversation with folk with similar interests to us. After the raging success of If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things, Jon McGregor is back with another potential bestseller, Reservoir 13 after taking a seven year break. Jon will be taking over the Contemporary to celebrate the new novel being launched. He’ll be doing a reading, there’ll be drinks and Jon himself has advised us to bring our dancing shoes, cause we’re in for a sneaky performance from Django’s Tigers. Up and at ‘em, bookworms.

Get yer freak on and let loose at their April Fool’s Day Festival of Fools. There’ll be no end of arty activities on offer, from pin the facial hair on the artist to face painting and a fancy dress booth. Plus, you can create your very own alter-ego with their lucky dip vending machine. Perhaps most exciting is Dr Brown’s iMorphia Experience – the chance to change your body in an instant, courtesy of the latest virtual reality technology. Count us in. There’ll be a bar, and rumour on the mill is that there’ll be gin aplenty. There’s also to be free goodie bags on arrival, and we’re all encouraged to dig around the fancy dress box and find the fanciest garmz to wear.

In a world surrounded by fools, it’s time to put all our trials and tribulations aside and have a little boogie. Some of Nottingham’s finest DJs are joining together to spin ye olde decks for a night. Digs + Whoosh’s very own Pete Whoosh will be showing us all how it’s done, alongside various others. All donations will be going to three Nottinghamshire based charities: OnUp, for young people with learning difficulties, Heart Link Glenfield, for children with heart problems, and Travelteer, sending volunteers to support the local community in Sri Lanka. Three worthy causes, some good house music and bevs all round. It’d be rude not to!.
