Marking ten years of celebrating independent record stores, there's plenty going on this Saturday...
It’s the tenth anniversary of Record Store Day on Saturday 22 April. The annual queue-fest was originally set up with the honourable intention of encouraging people to visit their local independent record store instead of heading to iTunes – or worse, the supermarket – to buy their music. One-off limited edition releases are kicked out on the day and are only available from participating stores. At best, the day is a reminder of the important role record stores play on our high streets and in our local communities. Increasingly though, the day is becoming an excuse for the major labels to repress their back catalogue, and the number of genuinely interesting products has taken second place to yet another Queen picture-disc reissue. Anyway, Nottingham can still proudly boast a number of independent record stores and a couple of them – Forever Records and Rough Trade are taking part in this year’s Record Store Day in Nottingham.
Rough Trade will be serving breakfast from 6am for the early risers on Floor One, with the first guests in the queue able to pick their records on paper. They then fling their doors to the Music Floor wide-open at 8am. The shop have planned a full day with a programme of music and DJs running from 8am until 11pm, with both local and national acts performing including Keto, Crosa Rosa, Pins and Maximo Park.
Over at Cobden Chambers, Forever Records will be open from 8am. Teaming up with record label and promoters I’m Not From London - who are releasing their A Decade Of Distortion compilation on the day - they are curating a stage of acoustic music from 2pm, before cranking things ‘up to 11’ at 6pm for the after-party that will kick-off with a band who haven’t played in Nottingham for a very long time, Lords. There will also be a licensed bar and Kiosk will be serving-up a Sleaford Mods inspired ‘English Tapas’.
And, of course, you’ll be able to get your hands on loads of Record Store Day exclusives as well as the stores’ usual wares. Keep your eyes on their respective websites for updates. See you in the queue.
While not officially taking part in Record Store Day, Plates Records will be throwing an all-day party down at Malt Cross alongside Acoustickle. With DJs, singers and selectors on rotation, you will be able to browse through and purchase a selection of imports, rarities and classic that Plates Records have specifically hand-picked for the day.
