Since opening, The Curious Tavern has been a happenin’ Hockley hot spot for a bev or two. But they’re not just a pretty face, oh no. They have an array of delicious grub, so we headed down to check it out…
The Curious Tavern bring fresh and tasty oysters to us land lubbing lot, along with some really tasty beverages. We kicked the evening off with a few glorious gin and tonics from an impressive selection. I went for the No. 209 (£4.80) with my guest deciding upon their house recommendation, Brockmans (£4.80). Both came with tasteful garnishes and quenched our thirst accordingly.
When contemplating the food menu, there was lots to choose from, with the ‘Tavern catering for meat-, fish- and veggie-eaters alike. We had the fondue sharer to start (£16), made with Gruyere and IPA. It was gooey, cheesy goodness and came with loads of different dipping items: chicken skewers, fougasse bread, chorizo, and garlic ‘shrooms to name a few. Proper tasty.
Moving on, we had a little sampler of seafood salad (£11). Super fresh flavour combinations of crab, oak smoked salmon, pickled cucumber, dill and lemon.
It’d have been rude to pay a visit without an oyster… or three. We opted for the English, the Frenchy and the Jap (£3.50 each) – ever the continentals. There was a really diverse selection of the slippery suckers, and the English was a true winner. Hendricks and cucumber, plus gin, and we’re sold.
There are several pizzas to choose from, all with GF options. We shared a Fun Guy (£11). Thin, crispy crust with garlic mushroom, mozzarella, stilton crumb and wild mushrooms. The gooey cheese with the crunch from the crumb was a true delight, all washed down with house Prosecco and the New Zealand sauvignon.
After what can only be described as a very indulgent feast, my dining partner and I didn’t think we had room for a dessert. Then we realised that’s what your second sweet stomach is for and ordered a sticky toffee pudding (£6) and the orange marmalade brownie (£5.50). The brownie had nailed the sweetness-to-tang ratio, and the sticky toffee? Boy, was it a treat for the old tastebuds.
We were treated to a five-star dining experience, with wonderful food, an awesome atmosphere and helpful staff. We even got a little sneaky peek at Lost Property at the end of the evening – if you find yourself wandering down an old corridor via a closet door, you may know what I’m on about…
