5 Things to Do in Nottingham This Weekend

Boom, shake shake shake the room. Like a rocket launcher racing through Nottingham’s air space, the monster that is Detonate Festival is about to explode into Colwick Park for a two-day feast of all-out carnage and utter mayhem. Almost twenty years after their first d’n’b night, the organisers are making moves this year, with the likes of Chase and Status, Wiley and Kano on the bill. Plus, there’ll be stage takeovers from Krudd and Gangsta Wraps, alongside a brand new hidden forest stage curated by Brickworks on the Saturday night. You can refuel on some top munch, too, as the Nottingham Street Food Club are curating the scran. A right local affair if ever there was one. Bellies shall be filled and good times shall be had by all. Keep an eye out for the floating stage, too...

Them blokes – who definitely aren’t from London – don’t half know talent when it smacks ‘em in the face with its sultry guitar sounds. The one throwing all the punches this time round is that there Stacey McMullen. His brand new EP, I Wait, is out now on INFL’s bluesy sister company, Wire and Wool Records, and they can’t bleddy wait to share it with you. The self-taught Notts guitarist first took to the stage in 2015, and has been wowing the crowds of Hoodtown ever since. With this release, we’re told we can look forward to a collection of songs influenced by Celtic, blues, Middle Eastern and Flamenco styles of guitar playing, with a whole heap of storytelling lyrics to boot. Sounds like there’s summat for everyone. Tissues at the ready, folks, this one could get emotional.

That Sneinton Market has had a bit of a revamp of late, and all sorts of interesting little spots have been popping up out of the woodwork. One of those pockets of goodness is Blend Coffee Shop, where you can enjoy a proper cup of coffee without being snarked at for wanting two two sugars. This weekend, they’re hosting the likes of Alexa Milne and her brand spankin’ jewellery collection. The local lass is displaying her bespoke pieces and offering you lot the chance to buy ‘em directly off of her. There’ll also be a raffle, so one of you will leave with a stunning piece of eco-silver fo sho. See you there.

J M Barrie’s tale of pirates, ticking crocodiles and flying children has been taking the National Theatre by storm. And fortunately for us who find ourselves north of the capital, Broadway and the Savoy are screening a live performance of the production for all to see. Well, those who buy a ticket. Watch Wendy, Michael and John take to the skies – albeit with a little help from a sprinkling of fairy dust – and bed-in with the Lost Boys and Tiger Lily alike. The kids have to take on the miserable Captain Hook, and avoid being eaten by a clock-swallowing crocodile in the process. It’s chaos, magic and imagination all rolled into one, and the perfect way to spend an afternoon with the sprogs. Ain’t too bad on the purse strings, too.

One minute, you’re losing four days a week to 24-hour raves, boozey lunches and epic comedowns, and the next, you’re up all night chasing a screaming three-year old down the hallway, begging ‘em to go to bed.
