Regularly one of the most active cities in the country, Nottingham's plans for this year's Scalarama look even better than ever...
The month-long nationwide celebration of all things film is back for another year of weird and wonderful screenings and, as always, Nottingham is leading the way. Kicking off with an opening party with short film screenings at Blend Coffee Shop in Sneinton on Saturday, September 2nd at 8pm, here’s some of the highlights that you’ve got in store for the month:
Saturday, September 9th
You cocky cock! You'll pay for your crimes against humanity!
Film: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Location: Toast Bar, The National Videogame Arcade
Time: 7pm ‘til late
Host: Fortune & Glory Film Club
Tickets: £8.00
Nottingham’s contribution to Scalarama 2017 kicks off with Edgar Wright’s 2010 action comedy at the Toast Bar, National Videogame Arcade. Hosted by Fortune & Glory Film Club, the screening will include goody bags full of interactive surprises to use throughout the film, themed costumes and drinking games.

Film: The Princess Bride (1987)

The first of three screenings hosted by Big Sky Cinema, the 1987 cult classic starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright and Andre the Giant is screening at Blend Coffee Shop in Sneinton. It’s an immersive outdoor screening, so people are welcome to take blankets and pillows with them, and The Super Kitchen food truck will even be there serving nachos, burgers, ice-cream and popcorn. Inconceivable.

Sunset Cinema Club will be transforming Sherwood’s Secret Garden into an Outdoor Cinema and Supper Club for their Scalarama screening of The Neverending Story. Complete with pop-up gourmet treatery from The Bakehouse, served up by Sherwood’s own Michelin trained Craig Poynter, the Early Bird ticket price will include food.

Film: Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
Location: Nottingham Writer’s Studio

Host: Bees Make Honey Creative Community

Bees Make Honey are proud to present a one-off screening of Pan’s Labyrinth from the visionary director, Guillermo Del Toro. The film will be screened in the basement of Nottingham Writers’ Studio as part of Scalarama Nottingham 2017. There will be a dark fairytale theme to the evening with artwork by Tara Hill and Kirsty Fox, plus themed drinks to celebrate this strange and wonderful tale. A short film by a local filmmaker will also screen before the film.

One of the greatest British war films ever made, The Dam Busters is the incredible story of 617 Squadron who successfully executed Operation Chastise. Carrying Barnes Wallis’ ‘bouncing bombs,’ they led daring raids to destroy the Möhne and Edersee Dams in May 1943. You can enjoy this classic in the unique outdoor setting of Nottingham City Airport – including a pop-up bar.
Film: LGBT Railroad Fundraiser – Short Film Night

Join the brilliant Nottingham Alternative Film Network for a community short film event in support of the LGBT communities in Russia, Ukraine and Azerbijan. Show your defiance against the discrimination and atrocities that are taking place in these parts of the world by raising money for a grassroots railroad that helps affected LGBT individuals reach safety.
Every penny raised from ticket sales will go to Gay Alliance Ukraine and Russian LGBT Network, and there will also be a vegan/halal, Russian-themed food menu.

The always brilliant Porlock Press & The Loft Movie Theatre are hosting anothing screening at The Savoy, this time showing David Lynch’s masterpiece Blue Velvet. In this atmospheric tale of small town intrigue, college student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) happens across a severed ear in a field near his father’s home, and subsequently becomes embroiled in the complicated lives of enchanting lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), and dangerous gangster Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper) – a psychopathic criminal with a penchant for Roy Orbison who seems to have Dorothy under his spell.

Nottingham’s contribution to Scalarama 2017 is rounded off with an all time classic, and winner of 10 Oscars in 1961, West Side Story. Still regularly performed in the West End and on Broadway, the iconic musical story of the Sharks and the Jets will be shown at an outdoor screening in the plaza at Blend Coffee House, Sneinton Market.
