Sobar Social - Recovery Month Special

Thanks to the media’s love of sensational coverage, there’s many a person out there who thinks of addiction as celebrities behaving badly on drink or drugs. But that is not the case; recovering addicts must have determination, commitment and courage, making them some of the strongest folk out there. To celebrate the end of Recovery Month, Cafe Sobar will be an official host for the Recovery Street Film Festival - a fest dedicated to empowering those affected by addiction. The films will address many issues that are faced by those overcoming addiction, such as making new friends, reviving relationships with family members or securing a new job. Plus, they’ll all have been produced by someone with living experience of recovering from an alcohol or drug addiction. Whether you’re a Sobar Social regular or you’ve got a friend whose hand you can hold, this isn’t one to miss.

Above The Law (Girl in Boots): The Castle Prize Exhibition by Zoe Spowage

It’s finally come time for Zoe Spowage - winner of The Nottingham Castle Open 2016 - to show Notts what she’s made of. Last year she managed to wow the judges with her bold imagery and daring colour combinations, and now is your chance to be wowed too, as her four week residency at Surface Gallery begins on Friday. Above The Law (Girl in Boots) is a collection paintings and wooden cutout sculptural pieces all in Zoe’s distinct tableau/comic book style. Described as one of the brightest and boldest talents around, laying yer eyes on this exhibition is a great way to add some colour back into your life. The opening will see live music from songstress Rita Pettai and a side of rhythmic poetry from William Spowage. Don’t get in a tizzy if you can’t make it opening night, her work will be hanging proudly on the walls until Saturday 14 October.

Daphne

Daphne is a typical Londener caught up in the rush of her daily life; waiting tables at a restaurant and the brief, drunken encounters she makes when she’s out on the town with her mates. This life of drinking and working is draining, and she seems to have given up on most of the people in her life, including her own mother. But then, after being witness to a violent crime, Daphne is forced to reevaluate her fractured life and put things back into perspective.  This cautionary tale is making a fleeting visit to Broadway for just six days, so if it sounds like the sorta thing you’d love, get on it ASAP.
Friday 29 September - Thursday 5 October, £4.50-£8.80, Broadway, event link

Sixties Style

There’s been many a time walking around Viccy centre where we’ve laid our eyes on the kids of today and felt like we were born in the wrong generation. Gone are the days of playing on your GameBoy colour or using scrunchies in your hair; it’s all about iPhones and JoJo Bows now… whatever the bleddy hell they are. We’d definitely choose the summer of love over a fidget spinner any day. So if, like us, you’ve always wanted to spend your days wearing sweater shirts and John Lennon glasses, Lakeside Arts have got the perfect thing for yer. To coincide with their new Roger Mayne exhibition, they’re turning Djanogly Gallery into a studio where you can have a photoshoot all dolled up in authentic sixties clobber. Choose any character your heart desires; a street urchin, a teddy boy, a style icon or everyone’s favourite - a teeny bopper. Photographer Jon Legge will be there from 11am, so just drop by and whack out your best pout.

Lou Lou’s Nottingham Vintage Fair

Lou Lou is back again to give us all the vintage vibes. If you’ve never been to one of their shindigs before, here’s a quick plan of action to ensure you get the most outta your visit. Start by perusing the 40 stalls of vintage fashion, homeware and collectables. Tek yer time, but don’t take too long deciding incase someone snatches that jacket right outta yer hands. Once you're sufficiently frazzled from on loadsa dresses, take a pit-stop at the Vintage Tea Room for a spread of cakes and bakes. They’ll even serve your cuppa in vintage china. Well cute. After finding the perfect outfit, you’ll be sure to want the hair to match. So it’s a good thing they’ve gorra whole salon dedicated to making you look like you’ve stepped straight out of Grease or summat. Victory rolls, pin-curls, beehives - take ya pick. Now you can see why Lou Lou has taken the title of Best Vintage Fair at the last three national awards.
