We took a look at the Indiegogo funded Nottingham science-fiction short film...

We all have things we'd like to change...

Director: Kelly Webster

Writer: Helen Crevel

Starring: Helen Crevel, Colin Baker

Running Time: 12 mins

A wall covered in clocks.  A young woman and an aging man, an archaic blackboard and an unfathomable technological breakthrough.  Everything about Time, And Again, as the name might suggest, represents the passing of time.  The old and the new, time already passed and time still to come.  On the blackboard is written ‘Casual Determinism vs. Chaos Theory,’ a signifier of the crux of the film’s key theme: is it possible to change your own destiny?

Our protagonist is Maggie (Helen Crevel), a young physicist driven by grief, desperate to find a way to avert a family tragedy.  Enlisting the help of an old friend, fellow physicist Theo (Colin Baker), whom she entrusts with knowledge of her newly built time machine, she must decide whether it is worth gambling what she has in the present in order to gain back what she has lost in the past.

Crevel, also the film’s writer, has created in Maggie a protagonist who is a far cry from the ornamental onlooker often given to female characters in science fiction.  Her subtle, understated performance speaks volumes and, in former Dr. Who star Baker, has a perfect co-star with which to develop a very believable and sincere chemistry.

Kelly Webster’s direction is adroitly patient and atmospheric, and careful attention has clearly been paid to securing believable, distinctive locations.  Time, And Again is an impressive, plot-driven short film that manages to ensure the emotion of its narrative is never overshadowed by the science-fiction nature of its themes.
