Speak Out! for World Mental Health Day

It’s World Mental Health Day on Tuesday, and that means groups all around the country have the chance to talk about their work and discuss what needs to be done to improve mental health care. Time to Change Notts are doing their very best to put Nottingham on the map in the fight against stigma, and they’re putting on an event at The Maze to help do so. It’s gonna be an evening of music, spoken word and entertainment focused on personal experiences with mental health and working towards a more positive you. The line-up for the night teases folk like singer Marc Block and poet Lytisha Tunbridge, and it’s also a great opportunity to learn more about the Time to Change Notts group and what they’re all about. It’s a free event, but bring some pennies to offer up as a donation if yer can.

Framework Charity Night

The days are gerrin darker and the wind is getting colder; safe to say winter is on the way. For us lot, who can look forward to snuggling up on the soda in a nice warm blanket at the end of the day, it ain’t much of a problem. But winter is a problem for the homeless and vulnerably-housed community in Nottingham. So, it’s a good thing that Framework are hosting a very special charity fundraiser this week to help them in their mission to prevent homelessness and promote opportunities for vulnerable and excluded people. It’ll be down The Glee Club, and there will be sets from Paul F Taylor, Bethany Black, Bobby Mair and other funny folk. Every penny from each ticket sold will go towards funding the work that Framework do in Notts and the rest of the East Midlands. You’ll get a laugh, and they’ll get some cash to help those in need. Itsa win-win.
Tuesday 10 October, 6.45pm, £15, The Glee Club, event link

Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival

It’s that time of the year again where the people of Notts turn into Robin Hood’s merry men after sampling a few too many of the goods at the Beer and Cider festival. Last year, Nottingham CAMRA brought us 1274 different real ales and over 200 ciders, and this year’s bash promises to be no different. It’s strictly a token only fest, so load yersen up on paper coins and trade ‘em in to sample some real hoppy brews. They’ll have vegan and gluten free options, and once again the fest will be host to the East Midlands cider championship. Pair all the bevs with numerous food stalls and a full programme of live entertainment on the Victorian bandstand and we’ve got ourselves a belter.
Wednesday 11 October - Saturday 14 October, £10.80-£21.60, Nottingham Castle, event link

Katherine Ryan’s Glitter Room

As Britain’s first woman to bag herself a worldwide Netflix special, you can be sure that Katherine Ryan is one funny ladeh. Originally from Canada, Katherine has down settled down in Blighty and has quickly taken over our telly screens, writing and presenting Channel 4’s critically acclaimed How Did You Get So Rich?, and popping up on everything from Have I Got News For You to 8 Out Of 10 Cats. And now, she’s bringing her new stand up show to Hoodtown. Her previous sets have all been about relationships; sisters, lovers and her daughter, Violet. But this time around, we get to hear all about her rise to the top of the industry and how to be a strong independent woman. Perfect mid-week comedy.

Mayhem Film Festival

Joining the October festival force is the fairly frightening film festival that sees even the sturdiest of souls quaking in their boots. That’s right, folks. Mayhem Film Festival is back, and bleddy hell is it with a bang; this is their thirteenth edition. You can bet your bottom quids that they’re going all-out to celebrate this anniversary with a total of seventeen screenings. Kicking things off on the Thursday is a very special screening of the 2017 hit, Double Date, starring The Television Workshop’s very own Georgia Groome and Michael Socha, and a 3D screening of Friday the 13th Part III is scheduled at the very fitting time of 10pm on Friday 13 October. There’s also a screening of Habit: a film that involves a young man who works in a massage parlour - oi oi - and finds something mysterious going off in room nine. Wanna know more? Well, you’ll be able to ask the director, Simeon Halligan, all about it, cos he’ll be doing a post- screening Q&A.
Thursday 12 October - Sunday 15 October, full festival pass from £75, individual day tickets ranging from £11-£31, Broadway Cinema, event link
