This weekend, for one weekend only, Matt Britton and Mike Dack have an exhibition of Conceptual and Abstract Art on at Rough Trade. We popped over to check out what was going on...
The exhibition is a blast of colour and textures. A real treat for the eye. The abstract style Matt has is not too dissimilar to some of Pollock’s early work. He told me that it’s an artist’s secret as to exactly how he created this layered effect, but a mix of sand, acrylics and other materials were used.
Mike has a very different, still colourful, style. Really eye-popping, you may even catch a glimpse of some of Nottingham’s landmarks.
The two told me that they had met the previous year, when Matt had come to Mike’s gallery, Culture Art Cafe, in Long Eaton. Mike quickly recognised Matt’s talent and took him under his wing. Matt has long struggled with mental health and used art to ease that. In fact, the pair actually have a book coming out this February that they’re self publishing to explore the avenue of mental health and art. It was really touching to see how the two had found each other through art and formed such a strong bond over the medium.
The exhibition is running at Rough Trade for this weekend only, so pop down, get an eyeful and have a chat with this lovely pair.
