Sister Act

Famous from the classic Whoopi Goldberg film, Nottingham Arts Theatre have decided to adapt and show an inexpensive production of Sister Act this weekend. Set in 1978, Doloris Van Cartier hides in a parish after witnessing a murder, pretending to be a nun to guarantee her safety. Expect soul, funk and, if you’re lucky, disco in what’s sure to be a proper hoot of an eve. Finish off the working week with a light, fun and energetic performance from some great local talent. Definitely what the doctor ordered. Treat yersen.
Friday 16 February, 7:30pm, £10/£12.50, Nottingham Arts Theatre, event link

On Translation

Nottingham Contemporary is hosting a worldwide conference about translation this weekend, packed full with guest speakers that will get those brain juices flowing. Discussions on colonialism, erasure and the political motivations behind different translations will be held. Sure to be interesting and with plenty of talks throughout the day, On Translation looks to be a great collection of new, leading ideas in the field of language. Best of all, it’s free. Get down at 10am and stay till 5pm, or drop in and out as you please. Sure to make you feel dead smart.
Saturday 17 February, 10am - 5pm, free, The Space, Nottingham Contemporary, event link

The Front Bottoms

Hitting Rock City this Saturday are indie-rock-fan favourites The Front Bottoms. Described as anywhere between emo, folk-punk and pop, these lot are quite the eclectic bunch and are sure to pull in a good crowd. Imagine if My Chemical Romance decided to take some inspiration from Sufjan Stevens or Fleet Foxes and you’d probably end up with something like The Front Bottoms. The New Jersey band last played Rock City in 2014 and have a whole lotta new material to show off this time round. So, if you want to feel sad but also jump around, check ‘em out.
Saturday 17 February, 6:30pm, £18.70, Rock City, event link

Nottingham Chinese New Year Gala 2018

Say “Ay up” to the Year of the Dog by heading down to Lakeside Arts and witnessing a mix of Sichuan Opera, Kung-Fu and more. Aiming to create a “multi-layered” expression of Chinese culture, these professional performances should be one hell of a spectacle. If it’s anywhere near as good as last year’s light display you’re in for a treat. At around ninety minutes (including an interval), this promises to pack a lot of punch in a short space of time. You’d be barking mad to not welcome the Year of the Dog this way.
Saturday 17 February, 2:30pm, £5/£10, Djanogly Theatre, Lakeside Arts, event link

Bath Bomb Make and Take Workshop

If you’re one for late Valentine’s gifts or just fancy something different, Bouquet Boutique is offering to teach you how to make bath bombs that you can take home. Personalise them, experiment with colours, make different shapes, you name it. After a short demo, you can do whatever with your bath bomb: climb a mountain, run a marathon, or just take a bath. You can even make a gift box in the time they take to dry. Even if you don’t enjoy it, you’ll at least smell pretty good as you leave.
Sunday 18 February, 11am - 1pm, £25, Bouquet Boutique, event link
