Scottish storytelling pop sensation Nina Nesbitt will be on her UK tour shortly. Ahead of her gig at Rescue Rooms on Monday, she reveals more about her evolution as an artist, her personal favourite song and what she’d be doing if it weren’t for music...
How would say your sound has evolved over time?
When I wrote the first album, I was around seventeen or eighteen. I’m 23 now, so I’ve matured with my age and I’ve experimented with different sounds over the years. It’s ended up as a matured version of what I started out doing, which is storytelling. A stripped-back, contemporary production.
What’s one of favourite venues to perform at and what’s a personal favourite song to perform live?
I think King Tut’s is one of my favourite venues in Scotland. I really like venues that have got a lot of history, that’ve had many people play in them. As for songs, I kind of like whichever is the newest song, because I haven’t played them that many times. So it always changes.
What’s your current favourite?
The song called The Best You Had. It was really fun to play!
If you weren’t doing music, what do you think you’d be doing right now?
I’ve always wanted to study criminology. I find it quite interesting, so I think I’d be doing that!
If you could have a chat with one person in the world, who would it be and why?
Alanis Morissette is one of my inspirations, would love to have a chat with her. I’m actually playing a festival with her this summer so I’m hoping I can chat to her then.
What are you planning on asking her, if you get the chance?
I don’t know! How she writes, how it was like having all that success, how she expects her going forward. I just think she’d be an interesting person to talk to.
What’s been a major career highlight?
There’s been quite a few. But most recently, getting to go on tour has been a highlight. I’ve always wanted to do it, and I got to see so many places I could have never seen if I hadn’t been on tour. So that was a really cool experience that I won’t forget for a while. Another highlight would be the collaboration I did with two other girls, and it was on Billboard. So yeah, there’s been quite a lot of exciting stuff recently.
Name one song on your personal playlist that you’ve had on repeat recently...
I like the Ariana Grande song No Tears Left To Cry. It was kind of different from what I expected her to put out. It’s grown on me. I listened to it for the first time, and thought “Yeah, this is cool, it’s really different, I love this.”
What’s next for you?
I’m doing a UK tour, starting in Nottingham, next week. Then summer festivals, and then put out the album at some point as well.
