We got down to Rough Trade Nottingham to check out Tee Peter’s new EP launch…
I’ve always been a rock girl, growing up with the likes of Nirvana and the Rolling Stones in the background. I’ve listened to hip hop in the past but I’d never been to a hip hop event, so I was excited to see what it’d be like. I was able to go in with no idea of what to expect, ready to have a good time, which was indeed provided.
Rough Trade was the perfect venue for this independent event, run by the University of Nottingham’s Hip Hop Society, Poetry and Spoken Word Society and MoboSoc alongside Tee Peters, who launched his EP The Journey on the night.
It was impressive to see Notts students putting together this event; providing the beats (DJ AY, Wilf Waves and HappyGhost) as well as the performers. Starting the night off was Harry Crane who set the tone for a chilled-yet-popping night, with a vibe that reminded me of rappers like Lunar C. Nebula, who crushed his Fire in the Streets video for Charlie Sloth, also brought his own brand of hip hop to the event, sounding like a mix between Wretch 32 and Anderson Paak.
We were then treated to the main event. Tee Peters unveiled his new EP, appropriately titled The Journey. He explained how the EP was inspired by love and how it can be “the ugliest beautiful thing”. Tee then launched straight into several impressive tracks, inspired by his and his friends’ eventful relationships with love, exploring both the moments of happiness and the moments of disappointment and despair.
The crowd loved every second; many of them were clearly fans of Tee and enjoyed his gentle-yet-charismatic rhythms and poetic spoken word verses. One of the most interesting aspects of the night was the way Tee expertly interwove rap pieces with the beautiful spoken word poetry he’s also known for.
He ended with a more upbeat number, joined on the stage by Nebula, and their two different approaches to rap perfectly epitomised the close-knit and supportive environment that Rough Trade and the hip hop genre promotes. Overall, the night was brilliant; the atmosphere was lively, the drinks were flowing, and the music was on point. I had a ruddy good time.
