To celebrate the release of their eponymous debut album Black Honey are at Rough Trade. What else were we going to be doing on a Thursday night?

As with the album, the set kicks off with I Only Hurt The Ones I Love. There are elements of Blondie, Elastica and The Long Blondes to their sound and also The Vaccines on Bad Friends. Izzy is a magnetic frontwoman with her Rocky Horror Picture Show red lips that feature on the front of the album, she’s the perfect combination of attitude, shapes pulled and talent. It feels really unfair to put her three band mates in the “Sleeperbloke” box but Izzy pulls 99% of the focus here.

With the charts due to be announced the next day, the band urge the audience to buy another copy of the album, “buy it for your dogs!” Of course, it did chart, an amazing achievement for an unsigned band. We get to hear a good chunk of the album alongside earlier singles such as Somebody Better. It’s not all fast songs though, Baby, a slower track is simply heartbreaking.

Izzy reveals that the band played The Red Room at Rescue Rooms as their first ever gig outside Brighton. So they’re delighted to be back celebrating the release of the album. We get to hear a good chunk of it before the set finishes with the awesome Corrine, one of the band’s first singles.
