Caroline Barry has been gallivanting around Nottingham for all the incredible gay and gay-adjacent events...

I don’t know what’s worse: trying to figure out where I have been over the past month, or trying to figure out where I am going to be next month.

For me, February started with a dry bang (not that kind!) I was still technically on the wagon for Dry January, but a Ru Paul’s Drag Race themed quiz at Rescue Rooms is not to be missed. We may not have won (we were robbed) but it’s the taking part that counts (it’s not. Winning counts.)

The LGBT+ festivities continued into well into the month, with February being LGBT+ history month. Broadway outdid themselves with a variety of films, and while I wanted to see all of them, my wallet only allowed me to see one. I selected After Stonewall on a quiet hungover Sunday afternoon and was not disappointed. They’re also going to be, by popular demand, replaying Savage in March which I suggest you catch.

Nottingham University was an ally for history month too, with a huge selection of events including a screening of The Killing of Sister George. I was impressed to see the amount of Chinese LGBT+ events they had on offer.

A nice close to the month came with The Rainbow 12th celebration awards evening at the council building. It was lovely to see the scene working together to recognise the achievements of those who have contributed to the LGBT scene. There were stalls from the council, police, Five Leaves Book Shop and many more. A special shout out to whoever put the video of the gay marriage referendum on; that was, by this Irish gay, much appreciated.

March is shaping up to be quite the month.  I’m heading off to catch the wonderful James Majesty in Propaganda which should be a treat. If you haven’t seen the amazing series, Dragula, then head to YouTube as it’s for those of us who like our drag a little darker then Drag Race.

I’m gutted to be missing the first Queer Noise Club which will be starting at Backlit Gallery at the end of the month. I foolishly chose to go to Copenhagen for a few days and will be missing a whole bunch of wonderful events. So, if you like me, you are a bit of gay art fan who also *cough* enjoys a drink…then this is the event to support.

International Women’s day takes place on Friday 8 March, with a lot of events kicking off around town. I would strongly suggest checking out the Reel Equality Film Club who are showing A League of Their Own in Broadway that night.

Speaking of film, Nottingham Contemporary are showing the wonderful documentary, The Witness, on Monday 11 March for National Bystander Day. So, how is this gay? If you don’t know the story of Kitty Genovese in New York, then this is another reason you should go along. She was a lesbian bartender who was murdered in the 1960s while 38 people witnessed and did nothing. Harrowing but a strong message even today.

So, no shortage of events for March. So much for my threats of “having a quiet month.”
