Nothing can quite beat the feeling of strolling through the Forest Rec in the middle of the summer, armed with a good read and a cold one, plopping yourself down under some glorious shade and knowing that everything’s right in the world. And, this year, you won’t need to look far to find your summer reads…

Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature has announced that the Big City Reads 2019 campaign is hitting Notts this summer. Launching on Monday 1 July, our city will turn into one huge, interactive book group in a bid to foster a positive attitude to reading, by exploring books together as a community.

Stacks of books will be available for you lot to pick up from special locations dotted across the city – all for free. Four books, each telling a story of what it is to be alive in 2019, have been chosen and championed by Nottingham’s Young City of Literature Ambassadors. The page-turners this time round are:

  • A Change Is Gonna Come - an anthology featuring top Young Adult authors
  • We Are Not Okay by Natalia Gomes
  • Heartstopper (Volume One) by Alice Oseman
  • The Boy Who Lied by Kim Slater

You can get your hands on your copies from all sorts of places – libraries, schools, trams, even the Beach on Old Market Square. There’s really no excuse to not grab one…

Make sure you also come along to the Big City Readers’ Day on Friday 12 July, where there will be discussions with the featured authors of the four books, as well as with our very own Young City of Literature Ambassadors.

You can keep up to date with the events and hints on where to find the books all across social media using the hashtag #BigCityReads.

We have a favour to ask

LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
