In this new mix series we invite local DJs to get creative with each issue’s theme. For September's apocalyptic 'water' issue, Michael McLardy gives us a stormy techno mix...
In September the magazine imagines Nottingham as a submerged, post-apocalyptic watery wasteland. Over to Michael McLardy to showcase his new sound, with a techno mix packed full of thunderous bangers, plucked straight from dystopia.
Hailing from Seaham, it’s not just his stormy new musical direction that has coastal links; Michael moved from the North to Notts around 15 years ago to study at Trent, having cut his teeth running progressive house, trance and techno night Fudamental back home. In his time here he’s had his fingers in lots more pies, running events such as Smoke, and labels including Left Wing and, of course, Leftback.
The latter label is no doubt what many people in the city will know Michael for, famed for its forward-thinking minimal electronica. But following a series of trips to the capital to see heavyweight legends such as Jeff Mills, Surgeon, Blawan, James Ruskin, Rodhad and Ben Klock, the writer's block that plagued him was lifted, leading to a new sound for his productions and DJ sets.
Like a fish to water, Michael has plans to join forces with a close friend to launch a label (with a few extra tricks up its sleeve) soon. In the meantime, take a listen to his mix to hear his new style.
I'd been struggling to produce anything I was happy with in the more minimal style. I decided to make some heavier, more peak dance floor orientated stuff, which turned out pretty well, and I really enjoyed the process – it’s reminded me of my love for dance music. I already had quite a lot of heavier techno in my record collection so I just started adding to that and recording a few new mixes.
I think the music is still stripped back and certainly not a million miles away from the releases I've played over the last few years. It's just heavier, faster and a little bit less polished. I’m just trying to enjoy the music and the process of making tracks again without taking the whole thing too seriously. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the new tracks too.
Laurent Garnier reckons his recent releases are 'quality', so we're sure we will, Mike.
