You know that bloke David Attenborough? Yeah, only the bloke who has captivated millions of individuals with his gift of bringing the living world into our own blinking homes. Sir David, President Emeritus of The Wildlife Trust, is making it his current mission to be at the forefront of global conservation. One of his newest ventures is to help secure the long-term future of Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire, by adding his backing to an urgent appeal for funds.
Situated in the village of Attenborough on the banks of the River Trent in Nottinghamshire, the proper magnificent nature reserve has been protected for almost 60 years by local charity Nottinghamshire Wildlife trust, under an agreement with the owners of the land. Following negotiation, the charity now has a pivotal, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase the reservoir. Subsequently, the Trust has launched a £1 million ‘Attenborough Nature Reserve Lifeline Appeal’.
Attenborough Nature Reserve was once an area of wet grassland alongside the River Trent. As a result of decades of gravel extraction and careful restoration, the area has become a safe haven for wildlife to prosper, resulting in a rich and diverse biological ecosystem. It is also an educational site where visitors go to enjoy the wonders of wildlife and become immersed in its dead peaceful surroundings. The reserve is home to over 450 species of plant, 400 species of moth and 160 species of bird, as well as rare wildlife including bitterns and otters. Heck. The continuity of wildlife conservation is essential to the ecosystem, and the future of this management will be determined by the ‘Attenborough Nature Reserve Lifeline Appeal’.
Sir David Attenborough has a profound association with Attenborough Nature Reserve, stretching back to 1966 when he returned to the village from which his family takes its name to open the sanctuary. This was the establishment of an ongoing association between the reserve and Sir David; in 1988 as part of the Trust’s Silver Jubilee year, he visited the reserve to review plans for an education facility, and proceeded to return again in 2005 to open the Attenborough Nature Centre.
Speaking in support of the shebanging appeal, our lad Sir David said: “Attenborough Nature Reserve is a symbol of hope in a challenging world – it is a natural oasis on the edge of a big city, full of remarkable and beautiful birds and other wildlife. Please give as generously as you can to help us make sure this place is forever safe in the hands of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.”
