When it comes to discussing what makes truly great cinema, it’s worth noting that there have been some strong British films in recent years. Known globally for our gritty dramas, unique style of humour and high-quality acting, it’s no surprise such aptitude remains one of the country’s greatest exports. Though we may fall short in terms of locally-made productions, let us not forget the ubiquitous British talent to bless the silver screens over the decades.
Producing the likes of Tom Hardy, Emily Blunt and similarly talented thespians, it’s important to remember that these Hollywood heavyweights once started out on considerably smaller pay packets while working on projects a little closer to home. Luckily, you jammy sods now have the opportunity to visit what could be the springboard for some of the industry’s next big things.
Less than just four miles from Nottingham’s city centre, Beeston, once renowned for its status as a silk-weaving hub, the small town may now be better-known for its pubs, shops and annual convention of cinematic talent. Running since 2014, the yearly event has showcased works from some of the midlands’ finest upcoming actors and directors, not to mention being frequented by Beeston’s honorary wonder boy Shane Meadows. Due to the ongoing health-crisis, this year's festival will be available exclusively on the Beeston Film Festival's Facebook page. For the creators this year who are looking to snag their very own B’Oscar award, the categories which range from animation to drama will be judged on stylistic flair and originality. Praised for its organisation and impact on the community, the festival’s organisers have also established their global outreach, displaying talented works from those artsy European neighbours of ours. So, if you fancy catching the next big star, enabling you to brag about it for years to come, be sure to take a look this weekend. You’d be a silly ol’ bugger not to.
