If you’re looking for something a little different to mark International Women’s Day this year, Radcliffe Sword Club might have just the answer for you.
The Fencing club is opening up its doors this Tuesday with a taster session which aims to encourage more women to take up the sport, while at the same time raising funds for Nottingham Women’s Centre. The evening will begin at 8 pm and runs for two hours; tickets are just £5 and all proceeds will be donated to the Centre.
The session, which is open to anyone who identifies as female, will teach participants the basics of modern fencing and allow them to practice their newly acquired skills against others. The club says, ‘It doesn't matter how old you are and it doesn't matter how fit you are. The beauty of fencing is that everyone can participate to their own level of satisfaction and ability and still get something out of it.’
Having formed in 2005, for the past six years or so RSC have called Clifton Leisure Centre home and train there several nights a week running sessions for both juniors and adults. For those whose interest is piqued by the taster session, they also offer an eight-week beginners course which is led by England coaches and covers safety, blade technique and coordination.
Secretary Lizzy recalls the first time she encountered fencing, ‘After one taster session I was hooked and ended up joining.’ She feels that the sport is ideal for someone who fancies something a little different as, despite being competitive, it still offers a fun sociable element, as well as an all-over body work out!
Participants should register interest via the club’s Facebook page or here. For more information on the beginner’s course and training times visit their website.
