Nottingham comedy club Just the Tonic have launched new digital live comedy night This Glorious Lockdown and there's an exclusive discount for LeftLion readers...
Just the Tonic founder, director, and sometimes compère, Darrell Martin will host a virtual comedy gig from his spare room featuring Britain’s top comedians. Starting on Saturday 9 May, he will be joined by Jon Richardson, Matt Forde, Naomi Cooper, Darius Davis, Paul McCaffrey and Phil Ellis.
Darrell promises an evening complete with a pre-show playlist, comedians chatting, an opportunity to heckle via Twitter, and inevitably, the chaos of a live show combined with the chaos of doing it completely remotely. He says: ‘We love stand-up comedy, but we also like not spreading any lurgy. So we are doing our best to bring comedy to the home. We are getting to grips with new technology, with looking at people in their front rooms, and learning to laugh without a crowd around us. This will be raw, it will be fun, it won’t be straight stand-up, but it will be funny, for the right or wrong reasons."
To fully create the one-off experience of a comedy night, the gig will be streamed live only. It can be viewed on phones, tablets, desktops and via Apple TV. But once it is done, it will be gone. The show starts at 9pm, but you can log in around 8.30pm to get settled in, sort the drinks & snacks out and have that pre-show catch up with a specially selected playlist.
Just the Tonic began in Nottingham over 25 years ago and has become known as one of the most respected comedy venues in the country, playing host to countless up-and-coming comics as well as the most established names throughout the UK. Just the Tonic is now one of the leading comedy venues in Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Reading, Watford, as well as leading iconic venues at Leicester Comedy Festival and the mighty Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Past performers at the club include the likes of Ricky Gervais, Matt Lucas, Al Murray, Bill Bailey, Stewart Lee, Mark Thomas, Simon Pegg, Noel Fielding and Dylan Moran. Ross Noble, Daniel Kitson and Johnny Vegas have also been regular comperes at the club.
