Despite the uncertainty of a potential impending lockdown, there’s still some light in the dark. The opening of Lakeside’s Djanogly Gallery is the first phase of a gradual reopening with will see the return of performances, workshops and museum experiences across Lakeside’s multiple venues.
Djanogly Gallery will reopen with the first major solo exhibition of leading contemporary artist Mat Collishaw, a Notts-born artist who rose to prominence in the nineties as one of the defining generations of Young British Artists. His work often draws on subjects from the history of art and photography and works with opposites to reveal the compelling power of imagery to attract and repel us, as well as deceive us.
Early forms of photography have been combined with VR and animatronics for an immersive experience that seeks to address the moral dilemmas of the present day. Featuring his 2016 installation Albion – a ghostly apparition of the Major Oak – alongside work focussed on our modern-day preoccupation with self-image, the exhibition is perfect for those who are after a much-needed cultural recharge. Which is most of us… right?
The reopening of the gallery comes after Lakeside Arts were awarded a lump sum as part of the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund, which has helped bring this exhibition to the masses. Lakeside's Director, Shona Powell said:“The Cultural Recovery Fund announcement this week is enormously welcome. We hugely miss our audiences and this investment will help us support renewed, innovative, safe and sustainable programme delivery – including exciting new partnerships with venues and artists.”
To ensure an enjoyable and safe experience for all, Lakeside will be limiting visits to one household per 30-minute timeslot, so audiences are encouraged to pre-book their spot for their own private tour of the exhibition. That sounds pretty decent to us…
