Bella Ramsey will appear alongside The Mandalorian and Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal in the HBO adaption of video game The Last Of Us
Nottingham's Bella Ramsey, star of Game of Thrones and The Worst Witch, has been confirmed as the co-lead in HBO's highly anticipated TV adaptation of hit video game The Last of Us. Playing the role of Ellie, the 17-year-old actor, who is part of the Television Workshop, will appear alongside Pedro Pascal, who also appeared in Game of Thrones as Oberyn Martell, the charismatic but ill-fated prince of Dorne, as Joel. Pedro was also the lead in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian.
Since its release in 2013, The Last of Us has proved to be one of the most popular video games in history, selling almost twenty million copies. Set two decades after the destruction of society in a time when most of the population has been infected by a mind-controlling disease that turns its hosts cannibalistic, the game focusses on Joel and Ellie escaping a pandemic in post-apocalyptic America.
The highly-acclaimed sequel to The Last of Us was released last year to universal praise, picking up six awards at the Golden Joysticks, including game of the year and best storytelling, ensuring that HBO will have plenty of material to work with.
Since first appearing as the fierce young Lady Lyanna Mormont in series six, Ramsey quickly became a fan favourite in Game of Thrones, and her death in series eight saw her trending as the number one topic worldwide on Twitter. She followed up her success with appearances in Judy, Resistance and as Angelica in the BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials.
The Last of Us series is being developed by the game's creator Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the mind behind HBO's widely-praised Chernobyl. Although there is no firm release date set, the series is expected to be released at some point late this year, or early 2022.
