Friends first, singing duo second, soul sisters always. Notts Based neo-soul duo MELONYX are live at The Chapel on Friday 8 October…
Emerging duo MELONYX are made up of Nottingham’s own Georgia Copeland and Nadia Latoya. After meeting as teenagers and bonding as individual artists in their own right, over time they formed a firm friendship built on encouragement and support for one another. These two have a long lasting connection united in music, and joined forces to gig the Nottingham scene; inevitably cultivating a longstanding desire to produce original music together.
Forming their multifaceted harmonic force, they will be performing an intimate performance at The Chapel (upstairs at The Angel Microbrewery) to showcase the work of their debut EP Black Elixir released on Brighton label Tru Thoughts on Friday 8 October. The show is presented by ever-reliable Notts promoter Tommy K Events, fresh off the back of hosting a lively visit to Metronome from DJ Yoda.
MELONYX are under the wing of Nottingham based veteran Hip Hop producer Joe Buhdha, who has worked with the likes of fellow Nottingham soul talent Harleighblu and Tru Thoughts stablemate (who boasts an impressive international track record), bringing together this expressive and fiery first release.
Black Elixir is the embodiment of a series of recurring conversations had between MELONYX throughout their friendship and time working together. Drawing on influences from the worlds of Hip Hop, Neo Soul and Lovers Rock, the release sheds light on the high value, power and energy of Black women.
Having already performed at Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here Festival, toured with Acoustickle, received praise from Wordplay Magazine and supported events organised by soul legend Terri Walker, the duo have a lot more to come. Harking back to their community roots, they have also given workshops aimed at getting young people involved with music and events and organised free online yoga for African and Caribbean women during lockdown.
