As Christmas approaches you might be wondering what to do this month to treat your loved ones to something special. Our Natalie Owen had the pleasure of photographing Christmas at Wollaton this year, an electric light trail that does not disappoint...
As you approach the Wollaton gates you are welcomed by the twinkle stars that shine above you within the festive forest, and soft soothing music that takes you along a winter wonderland path surrounded by animals hiding in the bushes that surround the Hall.
Two enormous, luminous deer will stop you in your path as you continue on your Christmas light journey - definitely a photo opportunity for all of you photographers out there. As you continue you can find another great photo opportunity, the light tunnel. This display was there last year and did not disappoint Instagram fanatics taking selfies along this tunnel creating soft bokeh effects.
Resuming down the tunnel path you are taken to a dazzling display of golden stars across a wooden bridge. This was by far my favourite part of the light trail. Instrumental music beautifully plays from behind the trees; music which can only be described as Edward Scissorhands-esque. It will instantly give you a warm and fuzzy feeling, and I encourage you all to experience Christmas at Wollaton just to feel like this - it will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit.
Once you have enjoyed the breathtaking views from the bridge, you are taken to the outer house to find handcrafted flowers that change colour. Outside you will step into an enchanting atmosphere of light. Trees that shine in stunning purples, blues and greens, and garden bushes with fairy lights that shine everywhere you look. There is a chance at this point to have a sit down on the benches to take it all in.
Even on a brisk winter’s evening you are sure to feel warm and cosy after everything you have seen
Make your way up the winding paths to the spectacular light display on Wollaton Hall itself. Children will love this part the most, seeing reindeer play and snowflakes falling across the brickwork will make a beautiful start to their Christmas.
As you make your way out of the trail, you will be able to soak in the final bright blue lights that will remind you of snow along the back of the Hall. Once you have enjoyed your walk you can end your evening by grabbing a bite to eat at the food and drink market. Even on a brisk winter’s evening you are sure to feel warm and cosy after everything you have seen, and you can enjoy a nice hot chocolate before heading home.
I would say my photos do not show the full extent of how beautiful the whole thing is - you really do need to witness it in person to take in it’s full beauty. Enjoy!
