Start the new year off right - with a big old dose of silver screen action...

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

2022 is shaping up to be quite the twelve months for old Benedict Cumberbatch. Before donning his magic cape and slightly questionable American accent again in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the 45-year-old portrays, you guessed it, Louis Wain - an eccentric English artist who became well-known for his crazy cat drawings - in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain. Directed by Will Sharpe, the man behind award-winning TV show Flowers, this promises to be a delightful way to start the new year.

Showing at Cineworld from New Year’s Day and Broadway from 2 January.

The 355

With No Time to DieOperation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard all coming out within the space of a few months, the globe-trotting action thing has been done - to varying degrees of quality - a lot recently. But The 355's star-studded cast gives this an exciting edge. Fancy taking a trip across the world, with a little bit of violence and deceit thrown in? This is for you.

Showing at Savoy and Arc Cinema from 4 January.

Scream

Okay, pretty much every Scream sequel has been an absolute travesty - but the first of the franchise is still one of the greatest horror movies of all time. So, with the original cast set to return, we’re hoping this film, Scream, is as good as the other film, um, Scream. Brain child of the duo behind 2019’s thoroughly enjoyable Ready or Not, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, we’ll definitely be rocking up to our local cinema in Ghostface masks on opening night - but we’ll leave our giant knives at home...

Showing at Cineworld, Savoy and Arc Cinema from 14 January.

Boiling Point

Is there anything Stephen Graham can’t do? One of the nation’s finest talents is back in Boiling Point, playing the role of a stressed-out chef in this tense, emotional story that is made to look like one single, extended take. This has already been a hit with critics - getting a near-flawless score on Rotten Tomatoes - and is surely one to keep an eye on when awards season comes knocking.

Showing at Broadway from 14 January.

Belfast

Based on the life of, and directed by, the living legend that is Kenneth Branagh, this exploration of a hard-working family aiming to get by in the era of the Troubles is sure to evoke a whole range of emotions. With a cast list boasting the likes of Dame Judi Dench and Jamie Dornan, the talent on the screen is as impressive as the talent off it.

Showing at Broadway and Savoy from 21 January.
