One of the University of Nottingham’s most famous graduates, Ruth Wilson, is back on our big screens in True Things - an intimate look at one woman’s journey with a mysterious man, as she tries to break out of the tedium of her regular life. Wilson has received praise for her committed display in this Harry Wootliff-directed exploration of female sensuality, and we’d like to think Notts had a key role to play in her success so far…

Morbius
Morbius probably doesn’t deserve to be on any sort of ‘best’ list, but it is an extension of what was once charmingly known as SPUMC - the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. After Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage made well over £1bn between them, there is clearly a desire for more SPUMC, and in Jared Leto’s anti-heroic vampire Morbius, this fun, frantic and frankly weird world is set to expand into bolder and bloodier territory. Fang-tastic, amirite?

The Outfit
Mark Rylance is having quite a year so far. After warming hearts in the family-friendly Phantom of the Open last month, he’s gone for a decisively non-family-friendly film this time out, with Graham Moore’s The Outfit providing an R-rated deep dive into a world of mobsters and murder. An expert tailor dragged out of his comfort zone, this looks a proper tense ride, and is packed with other exciting talent including Zoey Deutch and Simon Russell Beale.

The Northman
The Witch. The Lighthouse. Director Robert Eggers is quickly becoming one of the most creative - and weird - filmmakers in the game. And his upcoming Viking epic The Northman looks to be his biggest, boldest movie yet. Boasting a stellar cast including Ethan Hawke, Anya Taylor-Joy and Alexander Skarsgård, as well as some of the most stunning visual work you’re likely to see, this is not one to miss.

Downton Abbey: A New Era
Thanks to this bloody franchise, everybody on the other side of the Atlantic thinks we all live in mansions and have teams of gossipy butlers. But we all know it’s only our Government that lives like that. It is always a gripping watch, though, it must be said. When the first Downton Abbey film was announced, a lot of people claimed it was something that no one asked for - and then it made almost $200m at the box office. There’s just something about this world that keeps drawing us back in, and A New Era looks set to do the same once again.
