Having opened to the public on Saturday 14 May, Suspended Portals is the new exhibition of mixed media artwork from Nottingham graphic artist, Amy Lee Young...
Amy Lee Young is a Nottingham based artist working predominantly in digital illustration, screen printing and risograph. Forever chasing escapism and pursuing all that is joyful, she creates artwork that encourages you to drift off and tempts you into recreational distraction.
Suspended Portals in an exhibition of new works, exploring new mediums and expanding on the ideas and symbolism that have been at the core of her work for the last couple of years. Amy has moved away from print for these new works. She has created large paper cut pieces and suspended acrylic mobiles in a bold palette of neons that are resplendent and uplifting.
The work focuses on colour, form and light and heavily features symbolism that is inspired by magic and ancient rituals, sound therapy and music, the sun, the moon and the cosmos. Each piece is a portal, a window or doorway, created to lead us into tranquility and peace. Guided by the radiance of the colours, the order and balance of each design and familiar motifs; Amy’s new work creates an environment filled with luminosity and calm.
Amy moved to Nottingham over twenty years ago to study art but has only rejoined her creative path in the last few years. Living and working in a small but lively city that continues to have a brilliant DIY force to its creative scene has formed the perfect environment for her creative practice to flourish.
This is the third local artists’ exhibition to be hosted at Butter + Sugar, following on from N.A.D.M.’s debut photography show in 2021 and textile artist Rebekham Johnston’s collection of hand stitched works earlier this year.
Created with the aim of shining light on the often unseen work of local creators, Butter & Sugar’s gallery sits within their Sneinton Market Avenues retail space. Stocked with a curated selection of locally-made and designed homewares and lifestyle goods, Butter & Sugar is on its way to becoming well-established in Nottingham’s retail landscape, and recently featured in the Nottingham independents guide, Everyday INC.
Suspended Portals runs from Saturday 14 May. Prints and postcards from the show will be available, and a limited hand-printed tote bag will be available in the coming weeks.
We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
