Hockley Hustle is a festival that’s spawned many children over the years, most recently with the introduction of cinema, art and social change platform Hustle Cinematic, and their environmental wing Green Hustle. But the first such offspring was actually a festival just for kids and families - Young Hustlers.

Thankfully, the event is finally back post-pandemic to entertain little ones and their grown-ups, alongside the big Hustle’s return this Sunday 23 October. Young Hustlers will bring together beatboxers and poets, dancers and drummers, graffiti artists and circus acts to the streets of Sneinton. A Cardboard City, Silent Disco, Big Fish Little Fish raves and the very first Young Hustlers Open Mic is just part of the epic line up of activity on offer.

Coming as the cost of living crisis hits families hard, Young Hustlers is the perfect way to come and enjoy some affordable creative fun and entertainment for all ages. Children can take part in a whole host of workshops on the day along with a full programme of street entertainment for all ages.

Support from Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID), the organisers behind It's in Nottingham, means there are free family tickets to give away based on need. To find out about the free entry tickets, get in touch with Ben from the festival team via ben@hockleyhustle.co.uk

Here’s the rundown of what’s happening:

Music Workshops at Carousel
Try out Beatboxing with Motamouf, self-described as the mouthiest bloke in Notts, who will be teaching youngsters how to beatbox like a pro. Work on your vocals in a Singing Workshop with Gang Of Angels choir leader Honey Williams and leave bursting with musical confidence. Or join the Djembe Drumming Workshop with percussionist Biant Singh, who will show the positive power of music through interactive rhythm.

The Booth of Truth, Sneinton Market
A collaboration with BACKLIT Gallery, the Booth Of Truth invites kids to come down, record themselves making sounds and have it pressed onto vinyl in front of them to take away as well as creating artwork for the record sleeve. Give it a spin.

Open Mic at Blend
Young Hustlers first ever Open Mic hosted by the funniest poet around, Ben McPherson. Anyone under the age of 18 is welcome to come down and flex their creative skills, read a poem, spit some bars, sing a tune, or blast an instrument. Ben will also be bringing you some of his family friendly nonsense poetry.

Big Fish Little Fish at Nonsuch Studios
The award-winning family rave, Big Fish Little Fish, is coming back to Young Hustlers. Playing everything from old-skool rave to club classics and everything in between, these events are as much fun for the grown-ups as they are for the kids, bringing creative, anarchic and daft vibes for the whole family to enjoy on the multisensory dance floor with a parachute dance finale.

Dance Workshops at the Brazilian Cultural Centre
Dance like they do in Brazil! Learn how to Samba, the fantastic iconic dance of Brazilian Carnival or try out Maracatu, with its folkloric patterns or pick up some AfroBrazilian steps that serve as the birthplace to many Brazilian dances.

Art Workshops
Design and create protest posters and banners using different and exciting printing techniques. This is a drop in workshop at Carousel led by Coleen Francis and Dizzy Ink running midday to 6pm.

Circus Skills at Circus Hub
Aerial skills for babies, toddlers and young people. From a gentle relaxing aerial session for babies to a silks aerial session for young people aged 7-16 suitable for complete beginners and intermediate/ advanced students.

Young Hustlers wristbands also give access to the main Hockley Hustle festival during the day, subject to specific venues' own entry rules and age restrictions. Tickets are Child (2-17) £3 and Adult £8 plus booking fees. All under 18s should be accompanied by an adult with a ticket.
