Nottingham-based singer-songwriter Molly Hindley caught up with us about her future plans, an upcoming project and her song-creating process...
On a cold Sunday afternoon, I sat down with Molly Hindley over a Zoom call, for an insightful interview with one of Nottingham’s biggest up-and-coming talents. To start things off, I asked Molly about what it’s like to be an artist breaking through in one of the country’s best cities for music.
“I’m originally from Nottingham, I’ve lived in Nottingham my whole life. There’s quite a lot for competition but there’s a lot of creative artists from Nottingham.
“I’ve spent most my life wanting to do music, it’s been quite easy for to me to fit into the industry.”
I then asked about where her interest in music came from.
“I come from quite a musical background. My whole family all do their own instruments. My brother does drama - I’ve come from quite a creative family. That’s definitely helped in terms of me wanting to do it as well.”
Molly explained that she’s a fan of an extensive range of musicians, including the likes of Hozier, Little Simz, Mac DeMarco and 070 Shake. As a versatile musician, Molly explained that having a wide range of influences is crucial to her music.

“I have quite a big variety (of music). The usual genres I go for are soul, funk, R&B, pop, I could never pick one, it’s too hard!”
We moved onto to Molly’s writing and producing methods, and discussed her new song Yellow, that is yet to be released. Molly explained the process behind creating the song.
“I actually wrote this one very recently, with the help of my friend Jake. He produced some of it and played a bit of guitar. I felt really creative and I wrote it down in my notes on my phone. Hopefully people can listen to it and connect with it, and hopefully it’ll make you think of that person who’s your kind of yellow, the person that you love.”
Molly has a new track, called love you, that is set to be released on Valentine’s Day. Molly explains that it’s an emotional track, which examines relationships, gender and sexuality.
“This is about being in a relationship with someone who you can’t be emotionally connected to because of their gender, it comes from a personal experience of me being with someone but then realising I like girls.
“The song speaks about how I should love the person I’m with but I can’t physically or emotionally.”
Molly also discussed some other projects she’s involved with in and around Nottingham, including one which puts live events on in independent coffee shops in Nottingham.
“So I actually saw this opportunity on flexrecords Instagram, and Mimm Studios in Nottingham. I thought I’d apply and see what happens. Luckily I got picked, there’s a collective of eight of us, so what we’re aiming to do is our micro projects, and mine is going into independent coffee shops and getting people to perform and showcase their talents.”
The future is certainly looking bright for the talented Nottingham artist.
Molly’s new single, love you, will be released on February 14th
