Hosted in various locations across Nottingham, we tested out Sap Plants Terrarium workshop...
You’ve probably seen Sap Plants in Nottingham City Centre. Whether at Nottingham Contemporary, their many pop up stalls, or simply hanging from the walls of your favourite Notts establishments - it's fair to say that this plant shop has become a beloved brand for many Nottingham people. And now there’s a chance to participate in their plant ‘society’ by attending one of their terrarium workshops - as this LeftLion writer did yesterday.
Created by Chan, the plant enthusiast behind Sap, this workshop took place in Sherwood’s Pudding Pantry on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Light streaming in through the window and coffee in hand, the upstairs workshop was already set up by the time I arrived, and the room was full with a small group of plant lovers, eager to learn.
A skillful and generous teacher, it wasn’t long before Chan began to explain the basics of creating a terrarium and created an example piece in demonstration. A self-sustaining ecosystem, it’s one of the easiest plant setups to care for, she explained, and they’re not too difficult to build either. Running through each layer of the terrarium and explaining their properties, the group quickly understood how to start creating their own and how terrariums work too.

Then, we were let free. Encouraged to work at our own pace, we had a little over an hour to build our terrariums, all of which would include three mini plants alongside any stones and nicknacks that we brought along to personalise our piece. An equally calming and precise activity, all members of the group worked at varying speeds. However, one common factor remained throughout - Chan’s eagerness to help anyone within the class who might be struggling, or just after some additional guidance.
An absolutely lovely way to spend a weekend afternoon, we all finished up the class with our own homemade terrarium and a mini tote bag to transport them home in. Only one of the many upcoming workshops set to happen across Nottingham - I’d absolutely recommend looking into a future workshop, either as a gift to the plant lover in your life, or a well deserved one to yourself.

We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
