Third Mill3nnium showcase an array of local talent at Rough Trade...
Third Mill3nnium have accomplished quite the feat by putting on this showcase of local talent above Rough Trade Records on Broadway Street. Put together by music business students as part of an assignment, the four hour show was filled with the brightest talent coming out of the Nottingham area.
The night kicked off with an open mic, where acts Dwiz, Fade2Cold, NPA, SKBABY, Logan and TZ Million had a couple of tracks each to showcase their individual brand of Hip Hop and R&B. Some acts even crossed over and collaborated live with each other. The stand out act of the open mic was Nottingham-based R&B singer NPA, who has an outstanding voice and great beats to back her up. Her most recent single Trauma is out now on streaming services, and is well worth your time.
The first of the headline acts, UnkoDennySK4, is an astounding lyricist, whose flow carries his bars with aplomb. His painted half mask, worn on the side of his head, gives reference to the more maverick faces of Hip Hop, such as Doom, Meekz and Ghostface Killah. His Caribbean roots shine through and he wears the influence of the culture on his sleeve. He's one to seek out.
Di$mal, who takes to the stage next, is absolute fire! The small crowd of around twenty near the front of the stage are loving every second of the set. Keep It Close is performed with so much energy and is an entirely different experience to the laid-back flows on the single version. The crowd is bouncing as ‘light that!’ is spat into the mic, the bass shaking the foundations of Rough Trade. I highly recommend getting to a Di$mal show ASAP.
Jayahadadream, once again, is a talented lyricist with that quintessential British vibe. Top One is a fantastic track, laced (as with a lot of her tracks) with samples of the voices of the real people who surround her every day. The simple beats and beautiful pianos are the perfect backing to fully push her thought-provoking lyrics.
The one takeaway from the night is that there is so much crucial talent coming out of the area right now. Nottingham really seems to be in a golden era of musical creativity now, and it’s time to start letting the world know. Liverpool 63, Manchester 90, Sheffield 05… Nottingham 23?! Damn right!
