Kultur Shock's bass player Guy M. Davis tells LeftLion a bit more about what to expect from the band’s show at The Bodega tonight…
What’s the most memorable song from your set?
The song in our set that is most memorable changes from night to night depending on the crowd, because it’s usually the unexpected reaction by the audience to certain songs in our set that makes it the most memorable. For example, last night our newly written and released song Snijeg, which is about support for the LGBTQIA+ community in the Bosnia-Herzegovina and their fight for equality. A video for the song is being released today. “Snow is falling on the pedals of the flowers, let anyone kiss who they want.”
What’s the most electrifying song from your set?
This also changes night to night depending on the emotional charge in the band and in the room we are playing. In Belgrade, the most electrifying song was Da Ja, when the audience was singing the words so load that they were loader than the band through a full size, large venue PA!
What’s the hardest song to play from your set?
This is probably different for each member of the band, for me on bass, the most difficult song to play is one called Tomorrow Is Better Day because right before we started the tour on which we are playing it live for the first time, we changed my part to be played on drop D which completely rearranged my fingering plus there’s this isolated bass part played on the upbeat under a vocal solo and clarinet solo the messes with my head sometimes.
What’s the most draining song to play from your set?
There is not a single song we play live that drains me, they all do the opposite and charge me with energy. The song that needs the most physicality to play in terms of technicality and fingering is Taiyou. Doing all the long van drives crammed in with the band, crew, luggage, and gear, plus unloading it, setting it up, then breaking it down and reloading it for each gig is the most draining thing in the universe!
What’s the song that makes you high from your set?
For some reason the song that makes me high is Hashishi because it puts the band and crowd into a mutual trance state. I’m often transported to another, ecstatic and peaceful space during the performance of this song, plus the audience participates creating a pleasing sense of union.
