How would you describe your music?
A versatile and upbeat approach to rap influenced by UK underground tempos. Fusing this with South Asian and international sampled beats allows me to bring the party to any audience.

What was your reaction to the news you’d be playing the FSN final?
I have been applying to FSN since 2016 just because I thought you have to be in it to win it, right? But with the level of talent in Notts it’s almost as good as winning the lottery! When I saw the tag on my Instagram, I couldn’t believe it! I rang Archie (Artist/DJ from Notts) straight away telling him that I need him to DJ for me at Rock City and he thought I was having him on! It then got emotional as we started this journey together seven years ago growing up in Notts. It really hit home that we are going to be playing at Rock City and is a dream come true.

What can the Rock City crowd expect from your performance?
High energy and versatile UK rap touching on sub-genre’s such as Garage, Afro-Beats and Hip Hop. The audience can expect to hear a range of different international samples which allows me to add my personal flair being from a South Asian background. The audience can expect to see that “K.Ji’s on the Maaap!”

Why did you enter FSN?
I think it’s an incredible opportunity provided by Nusic, Rock City and Nottingham Splendour which I think really needs to be commended. I can’t imagine many other cities outside of London having competitions like this for up-and-coming artists to potentially move to the next level. As I said, it’s a dream come true so big up to Mark, Sam, everyone at Nusic and all involved who make opportunities like this for us Notts creatives.

Who are your biggest musical influences?
Working closely with Archie, I would say he’s a huge influence on my music. His talent is crazy! UK Urban artists such as Dave, Ghetts and Avelino have inspired me from a young age. Expanding my horizons by listening to Punjabi artists such as Shubh, Raf Saperra and Sidhu Moose Wala (#RIPSidhuMooseWala) have also been great influences in fusing Punjabi culture in my music.

What Nottingham artists are you loving at the minute?
Archie, Mk-Tential and Logan are three home grown rappers/artists that have been killing it for ages. Chawe and Andre the producer are smashing it. Big shout out to Nottingham natives Nebula, Ben DSP and Jayahadadream. Outside of the rap scene, I am actually a big fan of fellow finalist Tom Shawcroft - I'm really excited to see his set. I’m also a big fan of Rob Green and FSN 2019 Winner, Remy.

What are your biggest non-musical influences?
I would say being from Nottingham is a huge part of who I am! My culture, ethnicity and life experiences are huge things that influence what I write about. I just try and be myself, I could be making football references to one-liners about my favourite TV series. I love the freedom that rap gives you as a lyricist to really be yourself.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Having a series of two sold out headline shows in Birmingham at the Hare and Hounds whilst in my final year of university this year has been a really proud accomplishment. K.Ji x Friends & K.Ji x Friends Series 2 provided a platform for other artists to also perform in front of 150+ crowds which was extremely rewarding to lead. It wouldn’t have been possible without my team behind me and those who support me. Now I have people on my side, it’s time for some more releases!

Any last words for LeftLion?
Thank you for inviting me to talk with you guys! Big up to yourselves, Nusic, Rock City and all involved. I’m so grateful for the opportunity. Nottingham City, I hope you’re ready and I can’t wait to have your support in getting K.Ji on the Map!

The Future Sound of Nottingham final will take place on 2 July. No tickets or booking required. Crowd participation is part of the final vote.
