The film explores the potential impact of AI in education...
Tell us a bit about the project, and how it came about.
Two years ago, I was at an event for AI in education and the conversations about the future of learning startled me.
The world is charging in a direction that George Orwell has warned us about for years. Things really feel more and more like a sci-fi film with every new day. So I wrote one.
The film is a sci-fi/horror and about a select group of violent young offenders who get sent to an AI-controlled facility where mind-altering experimentation gradually becomes more sinister and invasive.
AI is a hot topic at the moment, and it's expected to impact broad sections of modern life - but very little has been talked about with regards to its potential influence on education. Why did you want to explore this topic?
I believe knowledge is the most powerful asset. If AI is going to be implemented into everyday life then controlling knowledge is going to be highest on the agenda.
The regular human believes what they read on Google, Wikipedia or now ChatGPT to be true; we aren't ones to investigate the truth as we would rather receive convenient answers from the internet. What if we relied heavily on AI to give us knowledge and the truth and then found out that the AI is actually incorrect/manipulative? I thought this was a great idea for a horror film.
I fear AI as I think we will use it for control and dictatorship rather than freedom. There are foundations that still need to be fixed within society (environmental issues, class prejudice, racial prejudice) that will not be addressed in the pursuit of endless productivity and 'progress'.
The fact that leaders of the AI world are looking at ways to populate Mars rather than address issues here on Earth is a clear insight into the misguided perspective the puppeteers of AI have. If we do not address and fix the issues in front of us then we are going to become more divided as a society.
Studies have shown that people are already becoming less empathic due to the distant nature of AI interactions. If we rely on AI to educate our young people then there is a possibility that they will struggle to debate and communicate in an open and free way. AI always has the answer to a debate; you can find it from a few clicks of a button.
All of the actors and locations are from Nottingham. It very much has a Nottingham Identity

We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
