On a chilly Sunday evening, Maisie Peters headlined Nottingham's legendary Rock City to a sold-out crowd...
As the pre-show music softly faded, the unmistakable introduction to The Good Witch began to reverberate through the venue, marked by a powerful crash of drums. Just as the backing track kicked in with the lyrics, "You wanna hear about it, oh, where do I start?" Maisie made her entrance, igniting an explosion of excitement among her fans. In a brief pause, she playfully responded with, "I guess when it kicks in."
Seamlessly transitioning from the title track into the synth-laden Coming Of Age, Maisie gracefully danced across the stage, maintaining the audience's anticipation. Body Better, another favourite of mine from her recent album, showcased her versatility as she picked up her guitar, skilfully blending unfiltered, personal lyricism with an irresistibly catchy pop melody, providing a cathartic experience for the crowd.
After engaging with the audience and sharing her connection to the city through her sister, Maisie performed John Hughes Movie, a poignant reminder of her journey as a pop sensation. Nostalgia filled the air, marking a remarkable moment in the collective memory of the room.
In a mesmerizing acoustic medley, Maisie skilfully weaved a tapestry of her past and present work.
Armed with her guitar, she started with the ethereal vocals of Two Weeks Ago, transitioning seamlessly into a snippet of the heart-wrenching 2018 hit Worst Of You. She then surprised the crowd with One Direction's Night Changes before culminating the medley with her debut title track and my most anticipated song of the evening, You Signed Up For This.
The anthemic Run stood out, followed by Blonde, which had the packed Rock City crowd screaming. The performance concluded with the TikTok sensation There it Goes, as Maisie shared the backstory and offered a brief interlude before launching into the crowd favourite Cate's Brother.
Her encore featured History of Man, during which Maisie brought support act Gretta Ray back to the stage, concluding the show on a poignant note. It was a perfect ending to another exceptional performance by one of the most promising pop stars of our generation.
Maisie Peters performed at Rock City on 22 October 2023.
