Following the release of their new EP Heady Metal, local four-piece Divorce headline Rescue Rooms for a sold-out homecoming show...
In years to come, if Divorce eventually do live up to their name and split up, the contentious details of their split won’t be royalties or who gets to keep the gold discs, but who bags the quartet’s record collection. As judging by this set – it’s surely a stellar one.
Whether constructed by themselves or passed down from tastemakers in the family – you’d imagine Fleetwood Mac, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, Prince, Paul Simon, Hall and Oates and Tom Petty all feature heavily.
Birds and Eat My Words further point to their assured proficiency only two-and-half-years into their career, while they also possess a quirky line in stage banter which leads to Tiger calling for one song to be booed such is the overwhelming love that they are receiving from the hometown crowd.
Elsewhere, the track Gears, a homage to their collective car troubles (f*ck Fiat, quips Tiger), juts and bounces around like a lost David Byrne track. While it’s difficult not to take your eyes of the formidable pairing of Felix and Tiger, you can’t overlook propulsive and funky drummer Kasper Sandstrom and guitarist Adam Peter Smith’s lines, which further embolden the band’s luscious sound.
By the time they depart with the chorus of their ridiculous catchy closer, Checking Out, ringing out, it’s difficult not to think that this band aren’t about to blow up. So, what of 2024? Well, first up, they return to Nottingham to support The Vaccines in early February, but I fully expect the Divorce snowball to gather in speed and size as the year unfolds. Watch this space.
