You've heard of punk and grunge, but have you heard of punge? There's no better way to get to know the genre taking the local music scene by storm than by attending the upcoming Punge Fest. We caught up with the creators of the event to find out what you can expect from an evening of punge rock...
Punge is a relatively new genre, how would you describe it?
It's a mutated form of punk & grunge hence PUNGE. Each band brings a third element to make them unique, such as psych, post punk or chip music. The music is outlandish but it is the attitude of lo-fi DIY & rebellion which propels the music to new heights. The live shows are very exciting with band members crowd surfing, whipping guitars, food fights and the audience jumping up onstage screaming into the mics. Everyone goes home on a huge high, its a mega octane experience.

Who are some of the local trailblazers who are pioneering this new genre of music?
For the last year new bands like Paranoid Alice, Iodine, Content Provider, Alpine Thrift, Minatore, Talking With Ghosts, Courtesan, Shrinks, Samsara, Unified Roots, Kill The Moon, The Clementines, Airport Dad, Nostalgia For Ruins, Soapheads and Cages For Preachers have been tearing up the city and the crowds love it. No one wants to come to a gig and be bored so we all give the audience a maximum loud time.
Tell us a little bit about the line up. What can we expect from these acts?
This Saturday at The Chapel we wanted to give people a FREE GIG as a big thank you to Nottingham for giving us such a great 2023, so we decided to start 2024 with a massive bang! Paranoid Alice, Talking With Ghosts, Shrinks & Alpine Thrift are gonna rock up and blow the doors off. The Chapel is one of the best live venues in England so we're all excited to be showcasing this great new music.

Describe Punge Fest in as few words as possible.
Fuzz, Distortion & Mayhem! We have some special guests coming down who love this music and there will be an exclusive surprise for everyone.
And finally, I'll open the stage for you to tell LeftLion readers why they should come along...
It's the place to be this Saturday if you're a fan of rock & indie. You don't want to miss out; its gonna be a legendary night - just like the Sex Pistols' famous Screen On The Green gig...or at this rate Woodstock!
Punge Fest takes place at The Chapel on the 27 January 2024
We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
