The Nottingham Shakespeare Company returns with another top notch production...
It’s 1983. I'm sat at the back of Mr Habershon's English literature class when he announces that the next 'O' level, (GCSE in new money), book we were to study would be Shakespeare's play Romeo & Juliet. After four weeks of arduous and at times intense 'toing and froing' with the themes, text and language I didn't get it. Shakespeare was just not for me. Roll on forty years. The scene was set in the function room at Cleaver & Wake. A full house waited with baited breath. What ensued was truly awesome. Cat Prescott, (on her directing debut), opened proceedings with a dramatic and explosive start. Immediately the audience were gripped.
an absolute belter of a roller coaster
The Nottingham Shakespeare Company team proceeded to enthral us with a highly entertaining, amusing and thought provoking take on this classic. Interchanging roles throughout, with perfect diction, acting and very clever use of minimal props we were treated to an absolute belter of a roller coaster. It would be disingenuous of me to pick out any individual performances as all the players were first class along with the supporting cast. I implore you to go and see these folk in future productions. I'm a convert.
Romeo and Juliet perfomed at Cleaver and Wake on Friday February 17th 2024. Please see the Nottingham Shakespeare Company for more info.
