Blue Soup is a brand-new club night coming to The Carousel in Hockley. Ahead of the opening night, we caught up with organiser David Triggs as he was playing a special warm-up DJ set at our Sneinton Market neighbours, Running Circle Records.

Bringing you eclectic selections of soulful broken beats, fast-footed jazz, funky horns and spaced-out dub flavours to make you move, Blue Soup launches on Friday 17 May from 7.30pm – 11.30pm.

Blue Soup is the newest night joining Nottingham’s resurgent, grass roots club scene, and David told us more about what to expect on the night and his inspiration.

“Nottingham’s my hometown and I’ve recently moved back to the area, and I think it’s a great scene. Having spent along time going out in London I was lucky to be exposed to some great DJ’s and great soundsystems, but it would have never really inspired me to get involved, because there’s obviously already a lot going on, and it’s a really competitive environment financially.

Whereas in Nottingham on the face of it, it looks like there’s less going on, but on a grass roots, DIY spirt, there’s loads. Going to nights here in Notts, I’ve found that making friends and people connecting was part of the experience people wanted. My sister talks about going to early Wigflex events and seeing people at those events, the only place they ever see them now, but when they do, it’s really like meeting old friends."

People in Nottingham really seem to have achieved that idea of a having a community around a brand or a particularly night, and making it about that, before making it about big-name DJs.

I’ve really noticed that it’s a supportive scene and that people would say, have you been to one of these nights before as they really know how to throw a party. People in Nottingham really seem to have achieved that idea of a having a community around a brand or a particularly night, and making it about that, before making it about big-name DJs. Which is great and something I’d love to do with Blue Soup.”

For Blue Soup’s first event he’ll be joined by Guohan from Running Circle Records with a starry-eyed blend of jazz fusion, soul and electronica. A guest spot from one-third of Leeds collective Lift Your Feet, Harry Rook exploring fusions of jazz and soul on the dancefloor. Harry’s recently covered legendary Marsha Smith (aka MarshmeLLo) show on NTS and the DJ collective’s just been booked to play at Leeds Jazz Festival. With Blue Soup bringing a huge stack of broken beat, old and new, to make you groove until close.
