Theatre Review: A Tribute to Amy + Screening: Back to Black

Website Amy

It was a full house at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold for an evening of celebration in honour of the late, great homegrown star Amy Winehouse.

Before a screening of the long-awaited release of Back to Black, a biopic of Amy Winehouse, the audience was treated to a performance by the world’s leading impersonator of the gifted yet tortured singer, Laura Jane Butler.

The only tribute act endorsed by the Winehouse family, Laura has been performing as Amy since 2007. She took the audience through a selection of hits, including Me & Mr Jones, Rehab and Back to Black, recreating the distinctive jazz-infused sound of the inimitable vocal powerhouse. A favourite moment was when ‘Amy’ invited audience members down to the floor to dance to her rendition of Valerie.

The film that followed, starring Marisa Abela, was a fitting tribute to Amy Winehouse, keeping the audience gripped throughout.

A Tribute to Amy + Screening: Back to Black appeared at the Bonnington Theatre on Saturday 4th of May 2024.
