Longtime and new fans of the iconic English synth-pop duo were recently treated to a two-hour concert at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena. LeftLion's Rachel Imms immersed herself in the experience...
Two lampposts and lots of impressive light displays were the evocative, timeless backdrop for this feel-good gig, featuring 26 of Pet Shop Boys’ 47 chart hits.
Neil Tennant’s voice is as distinctive as it was in the 1980s, and his wry smile gives you the impression that the duo would be great fun to hang out with. Chris Lowe’s more understated stage presence was as cool as ever.
Opening with Suburbia and closing with an encore of West End Girls, which was greeted with much excitement, as well as the more mellow Being Boring, there was no low point in terms of the set list – it definitely WASN’T boring.
The crowd's favourite songs seemed to be Rent and Heart, accompanied by lively, red, electro-style pyrotechnics. Tennant serenaded the crowd with Always on my Mind, who enthusiastically sang the chorus back to him.
The band was supported by 90s trance DJ Dave Pearce, who got the dance fans among the audience going – people in the front rows were certainly ‘having it large’ to hits such as Insomnia by Faithless.
Although tickets for this show were not exactly cheap, it’s obvious that Pet Shop Boys, sometimes heralded as being “the greatest band in British history”, are still pulling in the punters – and will be for as long as they continue performing.
Pet Shop Boys performed at Motorpoint Arena on 6th June 2024.
We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
