Nottingham’s iconic and anarchic music collective DiY Soundsystem joined forces with kindred friends Smokescreen Soundsystem for an all-night, sold-out party at Hidden Warehouse on 7 September 2024
Founded in our city 35 years ago by a group of music-loving mates, DiY went on to be a driving force in the free party movement and global house scene, throwing and inspiring decades of legendary raves – as well as forming a highly respected record label, Strictly 4 Groovers.
In his book Dreaming in Yellow, founding member Harry Harrison notes that DiY represents a “dichotomy between social anger, a wish to change society and downright hedonistic indulgence,” still in full force across DiY and Smokescreen’s ever-expanding community of followers across the UK and beyond – many of whom gathered in Nottingham for a unique, cross-generational celebration of underground house music.
The shared passions of DiY, Smokescreen and all the collectives inspired by them – including soundsystems founded by members’ own children and their friends, such as Risky Disco and Shutdown – have always extended beyond music, powered by a radical desire to create art, bring people together and push against the status quo.
Ravers from far and wide descended on Hidden Warehouse to mark the enduring legacies of DiY and Smokescreen with a massive party and 4am finale dedicated to the late, great Danielle Moore of Nottingham’s Crazy P.

We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
