The Robin Hood Beer and Cider Festival is Nottingham’s flagship celebration of ale and cider, having taken place in the city for nearly half a century. It’s back this year from Wednesday 9 – Saturday 12 October, taking place at Trent Bridge cricket ground.
Now in its 47th year, the festival was first held in Nottingham in 1976 at the Victoria Leisure Centre, featuring just 29 beers from 15 breweries. It was originally born out of the 1970s CAMRA (Campaign For Real Ale) movement; CAMRA first formed nationally in 1971 and the Nottingham branch was formed two years later. The festival was held at the Victoria Centre between 1976 and 2007, before moving over to Nottingham Castle (2008-2017) and the Motorpoint Arena (2018-2019) before making Trent Bridge it’s home from 2021 onwards.
This year’s festival will extend onto the Trent Bridge turf for the first time, with new real ale bars in place on the venue’s historic outfield. Patrons will be able to enjoy the beer festival experience from a marquee housed on the field, or take in the scene from the stands, while the ground’s concourse areas and Trent Bridge Inn Courtyard will also continue to feature bars, food stalls, retail outlets and live music. There will be in excess of 600 draught beers and 140 ciders and perries available to sample across the festival site.
Brewery bars representing include Castle Rock, Blue Monkey, Black Iris, Bang The Elephant, Lincoln Green, Thornbridge, Nottingham Brewery, Lenton Lane and Shipstone’s. There’s also live music, lots of food and merchandise stalls and more besides.
“Last year’s festival was our best yet and we’re delighted to be back at Trent Bridge with plans to make more improvements to the scale, choice and entertainment,” said Steve Westby, Chair of Nottingham CAMRA.
“Nottingham has a great brewing heritage and the newcomers are also making interesting beers which adds to the choice and variety. We hope to attract more guests than ever before, and while it certainly helps to be a beer or cider drinker, there really is something for everyone.”
Tickets are priced at £16 (Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 Sept) and £27 (Friday 11 and Saturday 12 October). This includes nine tokens (roughly three half pints of most beers and ciders) and a festival beer glass, which you can keep afterwards. Any CAMRA member presenting a valid membership card on entry will also be given an extra 3 tokens. A season ticket, which gets you access to all sessions, is also available for £49.
