With almost 50 albums in his cannon, King Creosote (aka Kenny Anderson) is in town to promote his latest long player, the Roman-themed I Des. Along with Emily Barker, in support and as part of the seven-piece band, the Metronome audience is treated to a performance packed with tender joy...

Mr Anderson’s previous attempt to perform in our fair city didn’t exactly cover itself in glory. On route to his maiden set in 2001, Kenny and Co decided to pull over at a phone box 15 miles outside the city limits to assess the state of play with the venue’s promoter. They got short shrift. "You’ve not sold a single ticket, I’d turn around and head home if I was you," came the dispiriting reply.

Fast forward 23 years and we find the Fife troubadour in a much healthier position. A sold out crowd greets him with a loving and warm reception on a bitter night at Metronome where he is joined by a seven-piece band, including the soaring vocals of support act, Emily Barker

Buoyed on by a well-lubricated crowd full of hipster beards, plaid shirts and low key, but expensive looking outdoors wear, King Creosote provides us with 90 minutes of tender joy, including his new album I Des, performed in its entirety.

Opener It’s Sin That’s Got Its Hold On Us, is an anthem in the making for lapsed Catholics everywhere, while Burial Bleak and Walter de la Nightmare are both moving and intriguing in equal measure.

Backed beautifully by a range of instrumentalists, including wonderful accordionist Mairearad Green, most songs are caveated with a mirthful yarn of either its inception or tour bus hijinx, including two great tales about an Australian song-only karaoke contest with invisible instruments and a 4am pitstop at a McDonald’s where the presumably bemused staff are given a verbal coating for the state of the toilets by an apoplectic band member.

"I went back the next day, it was spotless - it obviously worked," quips Anderson.

By the time album closer - the yearning Please Come Back I Will Listen, I Will Behave, I Will Toe The Line (we’ve all been there Kenny!) - is aired, King Creosote has the sold out masses right where they want them. That includes the deep-voiced bloke behind me who greets the conclusion of every track with "That was mint!"

More than two decades have passed since that sombre phone call, a larger venue might be in order the next time the collective from the east coast of Scotland heads south down the A1.
