Experimental drag comes to the city...
In the season premiere of Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 16, drag queen Megami stood proudly on stage with a banner simply saying, ‘Protect Queer Art’. ‘Was Nightmare Nightmare Kill Kill the sort of art she had in mind at the time’ I thought as the word ‘Mingestance’ was said for the 10th time, hard to say (not that it really matters because she was a bit rubbish, lets be honest), what I do know is that local drag talent Benthic Zone, Doxxie Phisher and Beta Max delivered us a show that was 100% my favourite flavour of drag. Is it for everyone? Definitely not. But their irreverent show involving crass humour, sickening costume changes and hilarious audience gameshows has definitely found its audience- and in my opinion, they killed it!
Kleenexes flying across the stage
Each bringing their own unique personalities to their performances, we were treated to a hilarious mash up of Joyride and Mario Kart (5 stars for that amazing kart prop from Doxxie Fisher), a lipsynch from Beta Max which saw Kleenexes flying across the stage and shoved into all manner of places, and a standout performance from drag witch Benthic serving double agent realness! Between each set we were treated to effortless banter between our hosts, and an expletive ridden version of countdown with the best countdown clock extra I think I’ve seen (that particular audience member definitely stole the show).
If you’re a fan of more experimental and alternative drag, and don’t mind things getting a bit messy then this is the drag show for you!
The LOL-GBTQ+ at the Lord Roberts continues until Saturday 9th of November 2024.
