It was a welcome return to Nottingham for Shonen Knife and their brand of punk rock / rock- and-roll rockabilly, with a coordinated cosmos of colour as always...

There was only one support act tonight: local band Luna & The Lime Slices.

They were new to me but I warmed quickly to their effervescent energy. Swapping vocals they presented an image of confidence and fun; blending punk, pop, a bit of blues and rap, they really won the crowd.

The band are successfully making a name for themselves and a well deserved name at that. Having already featured in LeftLion, they're part of what is quickly become a brilliant Nottinghamshire creative scene.

Some members are also part of Split, recent runners-up in the Ultimate Battle of the Bands competition.

Shonen Knife returned to Nottingham with their blend of Ramones-inspired Japanese punk food rock on the Have a Knife Day tour. Their formula is classic and simple and it's always a pleasure to watch them.

They roared through the set with such bubbly infectious power; they really are one of those bands that make you feel completely alive. I have no idea how I managed not to end up behind someone and thrilled to the unfettered view of such an amazing band.

The trio of Atsuko, Naoko and Risa just seemed so happy to be on stage and doing what they love. There was a bit of audience participation with the shouts of "Candy..." - no I couldn't remember the Japanese but heyho, let's go. Jumping about in their colourful co-ordinated (as ever) clothes, the audience lapped it up with delight.

There was a great light show for both bands, and amazing Shonen Knife leather jacket on the merch stand. I know many were tempted.

Shonen Knife: a colourful, noisy, excited and legendary band. What more can you ask for?
