There's loads of events happening this week in Notts. We have the start of the Poetry festival, a re-invention of Hamlet, a indie music market and a live podcast event from Scummy Mummies...

1

Hamlet: The Rest is Silence

Where: Theatre Royal Concert Hall
When:
Tuesday 10 - Wednesday 11 June
How much:
£15

Directed by Rebecca Morris and developed through The Theatre Royal’s Shakespeare Nation Programme, this 90-minute adaptation distills the original text to explore the power of silence and sound in Hamlet’s search for truth. Offering a bold, community-driven reimagining of this Shakespearean classic.

2

Scummy Mummies - Hot Mess

Where: Nottingham Playhouse
When: Tuesday 10 Jun
How much: £25

For podcast queens Helen Thorn and Ellie Gibson, no topic is off-limits. The Scummy Mummies invite you along to a night full of sequins, songs, and side-splitting confessions about the madness of modern motherhood. From the menopause to mansplaining, to teenagers and Tinder, it’s the perfect “mums' night out” - or anyone who’s ever felt like a Hot Mess.

3

Penguin

Where: Djanogly Theatre, Lakeside Arts
When: Tuesday 10 Jun
How much: £16

In this award-winning one-man show, Hamzah Al Hussein uses movement, dance and humour to tell his story as a disabled Syrian refugee. By reclaiming a term previously used to bully him, Hamzah celebrates identify and self-acceptance and invites you along with him.

4

BBC Music Introducing in the East Midlands

Where: Metronome
When: Wed 11 June
How much: Free

Spotlighting the region’s freshest new sounds, Dean Jackson is back once again with his handpicked hotshots for Spring. Experience the genre-blending soul and Afrobeat from Manye Fi, bop your head and stomp your feet along to anthemic indie-pop courtesy of Drew Thomas, and indulge within the heartfelt folk-pop of Harry Lyon. Whilst tickets are free, booking is essential to secure your spot in the pit for your new favourite artist.

5

Nottingham Poetry Festival

When: Friday 13 - Sunday 22 June
Where: Metronome
How much: Various depending on event

Returning for its ninth year, Nottingham’s Poetry Festival is perhaps our favourite soapbox that nationally and locally acclaimed poets and performers can grace. Expect powerful words from JayaHadADream, fresh perspectives from Jah Digga, and a showcase of the country’s rich poetic talent.

6

Chaos Casino

Where: Nottingham Playhouse
When: Friday 13 - Saturday 14 June
How much: £15.00

Bridie Squires, poet, playwright, producer and Nottingham-local performance artist, invites you to Chaos Casino, a show pulled in the directions of spoken word and audience games. Supported by GamLEARN (lived experience and gambling network), and inspired by two years of night shifts working as a croupier, Casino brings awareness to the negative effects of the gambling industry.

7

Lost Weekend Festival

Where: Nottingham Rugby Club
When: Saturday 14 June
How much: £44

While Nottingham Rugby Club on a Saturday daytime might not seem the most obvious time and venue for a rave, this event is sure to please house music lovers. Acts performing include X-Press 2, K-Klass, Shades of Rhythm, Jeremy Healy and Stanton Warriors. Perhaps most importantly local legends Lovezoo are involved and after 26 years of organising parties around here they definitely know how to get a crowd of people dancing. The event runs from 11am to 10pm, so you can even get the bus home after.

8

Independent Label Market

Where: Rough Trade
When: Sunday 15 June
How much: Free

Whether you're into pop, jazz, house or more, the Independent Label Market has something for you. Get ready for an afternoon of celebrating indie record labels and their artists with live music and DJs.
