Despite Yard Act having performed at Rock City a few years ago, LeftLion their fans jumped at the chance to see the band in the much more intimate setting of Rough Trade, and even get the opportunity to meet them afterwards at the album signing...
The band played two in-store shows at Nottingham's Rough Trade, with doors opening at 5pm and 8pm and with album signings taking place as part of the concert.
I have to start by highlighting the incredible work of the Rough Trade staff and security team. During the opening song, a woman in the middle of the crowd became unwell, and everyone, from the band to the venue staff, reacted immediately to make sure she was OK and safely guided her to a quieter, cooler area. This deserves praise because knowing you'll be looked after if something goes wrong makes live music feel even more enjoyable.
Now, on to what we all went to Rough Trade for – the band and their music. And what an evening it was. The set centred around Yard Act's new album, You're Gonna Need a Little Music, released on 17 July. I have to admit that what started as a great performance quickly turned into one of my favourite gigs of the year.
Ever since the album was released, I've been obsessed with Redeemer, so hearing it live was a real highlight. But what surprised me most was how quickly the newer songs grew on me. One after another, they sounded even bigger and more vibrant live, making it impossible not to get caught up in the energy of the room.
Lead singer James Smith was as entertaining between songs as he was during them. His witty observations and effortless conversations with the crowd made the evening feel relaxed and personal, while his spoken-word style delivery and commanding stage presence drew everyone into each track. Every song felt like stepping into a different story. The blend of sharp guitar riffs, driving bass-lines, punchy drums and electronic textures created a constantly shifting sound that kept the audience engaged from start to finish, meaning no song was ever the same.
One of my favourite moments came when the band played the album's title track, with people in the crowd, myself included, joining in with the chorus - and I couldn’t help it but do a little dance along.
At the end of the set people get to share the room in a more personal environment with the band members, to buy merch or simply have a chat. It's a small touch, but one that makes in-store events like this feel much more personal than a standard gig.
Yard Act proved once again why they are one of the UK's most exciting live bands. Their mix of humour, storytelling and infectious music made for a memorable evening, and seeing them in such an intimate venue only made the experience even more special. So thank you, Rough Trade and Yard Act.
