Automate: An Exhibition by NCN
The youth of the city get a bad rap a lot of the time, but some of ‘em are actually doing a lot of good for the eyeballs of the likes of you and me. Surface Gallery are host to a collection of works from the creative boggers that have been lingering behind the doors of New College Nottingham, grafting away to make various work. From photography, to graphic design, to film, all the art explores the effects of automation, specifically the means of artistic production. Get to know. These ones might be all rich and famous in a few years and you will’ve seen ‘em first.

#RefugeesWelcome
We’ve seen one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our lifetimes spanning the past two years, and most of the media have blasted some pretty sickening narratives into the minds of many. As a rebuttal to the message that people suffering at the hands of war aren’t welcome, Rebecca Winfield has developed this production with the support of Nottingham Playhouse’s Participation Team. Funny, poignant and heart-breaking, the play will tell the stories of those seeking asylum in Europe while exploring the solutions offered by the EU, and asking the questions of whether we could do more to help, and if refugees are really being welcomed at all.
Tuesday 21 June, 8pm, free, Nottingham Playhouse
Wah Wah
We love a bit of analogue goodness at LeftLion. Good job then that Malt Cross are host to the second ever event that champions everything non-digital. The workshop underneath the building is being opened up to makers and creative beings all over for a letterpress workshop from Cleeve Press and Pop Press, as well as portrait photography from Leicester Lo-Fi Photography. On top of all that, there’ll be tons of board games to get stuck into, an exhibition from analogue photographer Chloe Ashley, and tunes from Plates Records. Oh, and all the craft beers and pretzels you could want for. What’s that? Not a bean to pay? Well in. And don’t forget, Plates have got a sample-based music workshop on the Saturday too.
Thursday 23 June, 7pm, free, Malt Cross
Jake Bugg at Forest Live 2016
A trip to Sherwood Pines usually means a frolick in the forest or a swing abaht on the Go Ape zip lines. Not this time. Our famous Jake is giving the rest of the woodland bugs a run for their money, blasting out tunes old and new for everyone to hear. With a new album out, it’ll be great to see what he’s got in store and how he’s developing as an artist. Keep your eye out for the preceding gigs the following days – Guy Garvey, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott top the lineups, and there’ll be food and drink to nourish yersen.
Thursday 23 June, 5pm, £36, Sherwood Pines

You can catch the full ‘Rod Stewart experience’ at the after party down Bunker’s Hill at 10pm, which you get a three quid discount for if you’re a member of the Rod Stewart Fan Club. Garry Pease will be the man of the moment, as the UK’s number one Rodders tribute artist. You’re welcome.

Just The Tonic presents Milton Jones
It’s pretty tempting on a Friday night to smash a couple of pints, then get yersen on the settee and be done with it. But doing that means missing out on the pure hilarity that is Milton Jones off Mock The Week. That’s right our kid, you can forget the turmoil of actually having to talk to people in a busy bar, and simply sit back, relax, and soak up the jokes of one of the UK’s funniest blokes. This one doesn’t drag out a normal stand up routine, he’s full of hilariously clever, and sometimes silly, one-liners that hit you in the belly again and again. Excellent fodder for the office on Monday. Hop to it.
Friday 24 June, 6.45pm, £16, The Forum

We have a favour to ask
LeftLion is Nottingham’s meeting point for information about what’s going on in our city, from the established organisations to the grassroots. We want to keep what we do free to all to access, but increasingly we are relying on revenue from our readers to continue. Can you spare a few quid each month to support us?
